Day Trips from Strasbourg You Can’t Miss!
Table of Contents
ToggleOne of the best things about visiting Strasbourg? It’s perfectly located for exploring the absolute gems of the Alsace region. When I visited, I was surprised by how close everything was, fairytale villages, lush vineyards, and medieval castles are all within easy reach. So close that we even planned an impromptu day trip to a small village called Riquewihr which I totally recommend visiting!
Whether you’ve got a few days or just one extra day in your itinerary, these day trips are 100% worth it (I’d do them all again!).
Here’s a list of my favourite day trips from Strasbourg plus how to get there, what to see, and a few tours I’d recommend booking in advance.

Charming Villages to Visit
This village feels like it was made for postcards. Circular streets lined with pastel half-timbered houses, flower boxes overflowing in summer. It’s no wonder Eguisheim was voted “France’s Favourite Village.” Wine tasting here is a must. There are small cellars all around the village where you can sample local whites.

With a riverside castle ruin, a fortified bridge, and historic half-timbered buildings, Kaysersberg is small but packed with character. Bonus? It’s the birthplace of Albert Schweitzer. Grab a pastry from a local boulangerie and wander up to the castle for some amazing views.
Colmar deserves a full day if you can swing it and an overnight stay which is what we did in the end. Nicknamed Little Venice, this town is just unbelievably pretty. There are canals, colourful buildings, and plenty of cozy cafés. Don’t skip the Unterlinden Museum — home to the famous Isenheim Altarpiece.
Riquewihr is another stunner and one of my favourites. Think cobblestone streets and medieval charm, surrounded by vineyards. This is a great place to pick up Alsace wine straight from local producers. I recommend walking to the town’s fortifications for some of the best views.
Historic Castles to Explore
If you only visit one castle in Alsace, make it this one. Perched high above the vineyards, it’s been beautifully restored and offers sweeping views of the Alsace plains. You’ll get a feel for medieval life as you wander through the furnished rooms and towers.
Near Colmar, this family friendly castle has interactive exhibits and panoramic mountain views. It’s less crowded than Koenigsbourg and a great spot if you’re travelling with kids.
This one’s special and not just for the ruins, but for the Eagle Park (Volerie des Aigles) housed here. You can actually watch eagles and other birds of prey flying right above the castle grounds. Super unique and something I wasn’t expecting to love so much.
Vineyards and Wine Tasting
The Route des Vins d’Alsace is one of France’s oldest and most scenic wine routes, winding through rolling hills, timber framed towns, and vineyards galore. The route spans about 170 km, but even just a short stretch will introduce you to some of the best white wines in Europe.
This lesser-known village is all about wine. It’s classified among Les Plus Beaux Villages de France and is home to passionate winemakers who love sharing their craft.
Cross-Border Excursions
(Yes, Strasbourg is on the border with Germany!)
Just across the border, Freiburg is a charming university town with a lively old town, a stunning cathedral, and a market that’s buzzing most days. It’s a super easy trip by train or car from Strasbourg. Don’t leave without trying a Black Forest cake slice!
Baden-Baden is all about wellness and elegance. If you’re craving a relaxing day, head to the thermal baths like Caracalla Spa or Friedrichsbad. The town also has beautiful gardens and Europe’s oldest casino.
