Strasbourg really surprised me and has A LOT of things to see and do. It has this gorgeous mix of French and German culture, cobblestone streets, timber-framed houses, and canals that make you feel like you’ve stepped into a fairytale.
I visited in spring and the city was alive with flowers and people sitting outside enjoying tarte flambée (add this to your list!). However, winter is also a very popular time to visit especially if Christmas markets are your thing.
Whether you’re here for the Christmas markets, history, just to wander pretty streets, or you’re here for the food here are my top 25 things to do in Strasbourg. I’d do them all in a heartbeat!

Explore the Grande Île
The heart of Strasbourg and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Wander through the narrow streets, admire the architecture, and soak up the medieval vibes. This is where you’ll find the Cathedral, cute cafés, and so many charming buildings.
Ponts Couverts & Barrage Vauban
Walk across these historic bridges and the 17th-century dam for sweeping views of Petite France. Head up to the panoramic terrace of Barrage Vauban. It’s free and one of my favourite spots for photos.
Tip: Parc de l'Orangerie
A lovely green space with a lake, mini zoo, and walking trails. If the weather’s nice, grab a picnic and chill by the water.
Boat Tour on the Ill River
Seeing Strasbourg from the water is one of the best ways to get your bearings. You’ll float past Petite France, the Neustadt, and the European Parliament.

Strasbourg Cathedral (Cathédrale Notre-Dame)
You can’t miss it, literally! It towers over the city at 142 meters. Head inside to see the stained glass, and make sure to time your visit to see the astronomical clock in action.

Neustadt District
Built during the German Empire, this area has grand boulevards and impressive buildings. Walk past Palais du Rhin and Place de la République for some serious architecture inspo.
Alsatian Museum (Musée Alsacien)
This museum is in a beautiful old house and gives a glimpse into traditional Alsatian life. Super charming and worth a quick visit if you’re curious about local culture.
Strasbourg Christmas Market (Christkindelsmärik)
If you’re visiting in late November or December, this is an absolute must. One of the oldest and best Christmas markets in Europe, with handmade gifts, mulled wine, and twinkling lights everywhere.

Stroll Through La Petite France
It’s the most photographed part of the city for a reason. Cobblestone streets, canals, and postcard-perfect timbered houses. Try to come early morning or sunset for dreamy light.
I’d recommend grabbing a coffee and taking your time — this is the place to slow down.
Tour the European Parliament
Strasbourg isn’t just charming, it’s politically important too. You can visit the European Parliament (booking ahead is essential), especially if you’re into politics or architecture.
Musée d'Art Moderne et Contemporain
Modern art fans, this one’s for you! The rooftop café also gives you a great view over Petite France.
Palais Rohan
This gorgeous palace houses three museums. Fine Arts, Decorative Arts, and Archaeology. Even if you’re not a museum person, it’s worth it for the interiors alone.
Eat at a Winstub
These cozy taverns serve up traditional Alsatian food like tarte flambée and choucroute. Portions are huge, and the vibe is always warm and rustic.
Château Vodou (Voodoo Castle)
Strasbourg has the largest collection of West African voodoo artefacts in the world, who knew?! Fascinating and completely unexpected.
Strasbourg Opera House
Even if you don’t go inside, check out the beautiful neoclassical building. If there’s a performance while you’re in town, I’d go for it. There’s something magical about seeing a show in Europe.
Botanical Gardens
Run by the university, this is a peaceful spot with greenhouses and rare plants. A nice hidden gem for a quiet stroll.
Day Trip to Colmar or Alsace Wine Route
Hop on a train or join a tour to Colmar, it’s even cuter than Strasbourg (hard to believe, I know). Or explore vineyards and sample Riesling on the Alsace Wine Route.

Kammerzell House
This ornate building near the Cathedral is famous for its carved wooden façade. It now houses a restaurant. Worth popping in for a look even if you don’t eat there.
Église Saint-Thomas
This Lutheran church is known for its acoustics and organ that Mozart once praised. It’s a peaceful stop and a bit off the main tourist track.
Musée Historique de Strasbourg
If you love history, this museum covers everything from the Middle Ages to the French Revolution. Great for understanding the city’s unique Franco-German identity.
Place Gutenberg
Named after the inventor of the printing press, this square often has markets or exhibitions. You’ll find it between the Cathedral and Petite France.
Covered Market (Marché Couvert)
Pick up fresh cheese, bread, and snacks. Great place to grab picnic supplies or taste local specialties like Munster cheese or kougelhopf.
Bike Tour
Strasbourg is super bike-friendly. Rent one or join a guided tour to see more of the city without sore feet.

Enjoy a Slow Morning in a Local Café
Honestly, one of my favourite things was just people-watching with a hot chocolate or espresso. Strasbourg has some lovely little cafés. Perfect way to start your day.

I’d recommend Grande Île or Petite France if it’s your first time. Super central and walkable. For longer stays or families, Neudorf is quieter and more residential.

Yes, it’s very safe. Just follow usual precautions, especially around busy train stations.
Strasbourg is better for first-timers and has more things to do, while Colmar is a dreamy day trip or overnight if you love small-town vibes.
Stay on or near Grande Île so you’re right in the heart of the action and can walk to all the stalls.
2–3 days is perfect to see the highlights and soak up the atmosphere.
