Planning a trip to Strasbourg? You’re in for a treat. This beautiful French city sits right on the border of Germany, and you’ll feel that blend of cultures in everything from the food to the architecture.
When I visited, I was surprised by how walkable, charming, and photo-worthy Strasbourg is. And the unique blend of two cultures really makes it stand out compared to other cities I visited on my trip.
But like many European cities, choosing where to stay can really shape your experience and I did A LOT of research before this trip.

Grande Île (Old Town) First timers!!!
If it’s your first time in Strasbourg, this is hands-down the best area to stay. You’ll be right in the heart of the city, steps from the iconic Strasbourg Cathedral, surrounded by medieval buildings, cozy winstubs (Alsatian taverns), and cobblestone lanes.
Perfect for: First-timers, history lovers, and anyone who wants to walk out their door and start exploring.

This part of Strasbourg is quieter and greener, home to parks, embassies, and EU buildings. If you’re here for business or just want a peaceful stay away from the crowds, this is a solid choice. We spent a few hours in the park here and loved the laid-back feel and leafy surroundings.
Perfect for: Business travelers, nature lovers, and long-term stays.

La Petite France
This is the area that looks like a postcard. Half-timbered houses, canals, little bridges, and the kind of romantic views that make you want to slow down and sip mulled wine all day. We stayed close to this area and found ourselves returning again and again just to wander and take it all in.
Perfect for: Couples, photographers, and anyone who wants to soak in Strasbourg’s most picturesque side.

Not the prettiest part of town, but if you’re arriving late or leaving early, it’s very convenient. It’s also a great base if you’re doing day trips. We stayed here one night before catching a train and found plenty of cafes nearby for a quick breakfast.
Perfect for: Quick stays, budget travelers, or if you’re taking day trips to Colmar or Germany.

Krutenau
This trendy little district is full of cafes, wine bars, street art, and has a fun, creative energy. It’s a bit less touristy than the historic centre but still super walkable. We went here one night for dinner and ended up staying for hours just soaking in the buzz of the local crowd.
Perfect for: Foodies, solo travellers, and anyone wanting a more local vibe.

Neudorf
If you want to experience a more local side of Strasbourg, Neudorf has a very relaxed, residential vibe. You won’t find many tourists here, but you’ll get a better feel for everyday life in the city. We passed through this area on our way to the markets and I loved how chilled out it was.
Perfect for: Families, long stays, or anyone looking for a quieter neighbourhood.

FAQ on Where to Stay in Strasbourg
Grande Île (Old Town) is ideal. You’ll be close to everything! Museums, the cathedral, restaurants and the atmosphere is unbeatable.
Stay in La Petite France or Grande Île. You’ll be within walking distance to all the main market squares and festive lights.
Yes! It felt very safe walking around, even at night. Like any city, just stay aware of your surroundings and keep an eye on valuables in crowded areas.
Absolutely. The blend of French and German influences, stunning architecture, cozy cafés, and canal views made it one of my favourite stops in France.
I’d avoid staying too far from the city centre unless you’re visiting friends or on a super tight budget. Neighbourhoods like Neudorf are fine if you want something quieter, but double-check transport access.
If you have time, do both which is what we did! Strasbourg is bigger, more cosmopolitan, and has better connections. Colmar is charming and smaller, ideal for a one or two-night stay.
I’d suggest at least 2 nights to explore the main sights at a relaxed pace. Add an extra day if you want to do a boat tour or visit the European Parliament.
Yes! Neudorf is great for families thanks to the parks and space. Old Town is stroller-friendly, and kids love the boat rides and Christmas lights in winter.
