I remember being completely overwhelmed the first time I walked into this iconic museum. There’s so much to see, and it’s huge. I did feel overwhelmed initially and thought maybe I would just go see the Mona Lisa and leave. However, I’m glad I didn’t because I ended up spending an entire day there and loved every second.
But that didn’t come without its challenges. So if you’re wondering about tickets, opening times, and what are the main masterpieces are you can’t miss, I’ve put it all together from my last trip.

Louvre Opening Hours and Best Time to Go
The Louvre is open every day except Tuesdays, from 9 AM to 6 PM. On Wednesdays and Fridays, it stays open late until 9:45 PM. If you hate crowds, this is your golden window.
My tip: Go right at opening or during the evening hours. Avoid weekends if possible, they’re packed!
How Long Do You Need at the Louvre
If it’s your first time, I’d recommend planning for at least 2 to 3 hours inside the museum. That gives you enough time to see the highlights without rushing.
You can definitely spend a full day here (it’s massive), but if you’re short on time, a few hours in the Denon Wing is perfect for hitting the big names and still enjoying the experience.
Which Entrance to Use at the Louvre
There are three main entrances, and trust me, picking the right one can save you tons of time.
- Pyramid Entrance – The famous glass one. Iconic but often crowded.
- Carrousel du Louvre – This indoor entrance is super convenient if you’re coming by metro or want to dodge the weather.
- Porte des Lions – The lesser-known option that’s sometimes open and usually quieter.

Yes, you can book on the official website, but I much prefer using third-party platforms that offer skip-the-line perks or guided tours (especially helpful if it’s your first time).

If you don’t have all day, focus your time in the Denon Wing. Most of the big-name pieces are here. Here’s what I recommend:
Mona Lisa – Yes, it’s crowded. Yes, you should still see her.
Venus de Milo – Elegant and iconic.
Winged Victory of Samothrace – One of my personal favourites, perched at the top of the stairs.
You can download the museum app or grab a map inside to follow a suggested route. It really helps you stay focused and not get lost in the maze of art.

Louvre Tips for First-Time Visitors
- Download the Louvre app ahead of time. It’s great for maps and explanations.
- Photography is allowed without flash, but some galleries prohibit it.
- Bring a refillable water bottle, and maybe a snack for after your visit.
- Keep your bag small. Lockers are available, but space is limited.
- There are rest spots and toilets, but they’re spread out, so note them early so you’re not wandering while tired.

- Wheelchairs are available for free at the information desk.
- Elevators and ramps are available throughout.
- Toilets and baby-changing stations are on every floor.

You’ll be on your feet a lot, so dress for comfort.

- Comfy walking shoes – You’ll be doing more than you think.
- Water bottle – Stay hydrated, especially in the warmer months.
- A light layer or scarf – Some galleries are chilly.
- Charged phone – For photos and using the map app.
