If you’ve ever seen stunning pictures of France’s iconic châteaux, chances are they were taken in the Loire Valley. When I was planning my recent trip to France, I knew I had to explore this region, which is home to so many breathtaking châteaux.

How to Get to the Loire Valley
You can easily get to the Loire Valley by train from Paris, but driving is hands down the best way to truly explore this beautiful region. We opted for a road trip, which gave us the freedom to stop at small towns and enjoy the countryside at our own pace.
By Train
- Paris to Tours: 1 hour 12 minutes (fast train)
- Paris to Orléans: 1 hour 52 minutes (fast train)
- Paris to Blois: 1.5 to 2 hours (direct or via Orléans)
- Paris to Amboise: 2 to 2.5 hours (direct or via Orléans)
There are several train station options in the region, so plan your itinerary based on your first stop.
By Car
The best way to explore the Loire Valley is by car. Driving allows you to take in the scenery, make impromptu stops, which you will do, and visit the châteaux on your own schedule. This is how we did it, and I’d highly recommend it if you’re looking for a more relaxed and scenic experience.

Main Towns to See in the Loire Valley
Here are a few small towns that you absolutely have to visit while exploring the Loire Valley. Each one offers something unique, from historic landmarks to picturesque streets, and of course, incredible châteaux.
Orléans
Known for its connection to Joan of Arc, Orléans is one of the key cities in the Loire Valley. It’s a great place to start your valley itinerary with its medieval architecture, beautiful château royal, and lively atmosphere. Don’t miss the Cathédrale Sainte-Croix or the Joan of Arc House.
Blois
Blois is a charming town perched on the banks of the Loire River. Its main draw is the Château de Blois, which served as a royal residence for many French kings. The town is filled with cobbled streets, cafés, and plenty of history to soak up.


Amboise
Amboise is one of the most popular towns in the Loire Valley, and for good reason. The Château d’Amboise was the childhood home of King Francis I, and the town is steeped in Renaissance history. Be sure to also visit the Clos Lucé, where Leonardo da Vinci spent the last years of his life.
Tours
Tours is a vibrant city and the perfect base for exploring the region. It has a lovely old town full of half-timbered houses and squares buzzing with life. Make sure to stop by the Saint-Gatien Cathedral and the Place Plumereau, one of the most beautiful squares in France.
Angers
Angers is known for the Château d’Angers, home to the Apocalypse Tapestry, one of the largest medieval tapestries in the world. The town also boasts stunning gardens and museums that are worth a visit.
Saumur
Famous for its wine and the Château de Saumur, this small town is ideal for those looking to indulge in a bit of wine tasting. The château sits high on a hill overlooking the Loire River, providing fantastic views.


Suggested 2-Day Loire Valley Itinerary
Here’s an easy 2-day Loire Valley itinerary to help you make the most of your time in the region. This will need to be done by car.
Day 1
- Start your trip in Orléans and visit the Cathédrale Sainte-Croix.
- Head to Blois for lunch and explore the Château de Blois.
- Drive to Amboise and spend the night. I highly recommend staying at Château Aperti, a charming château that will make you feel like royalty. This is where we stayed!
Day 2
- Visit the Château d’Amboise and the Clos Lucé in the morning.
- Head to Château de Chenonceau for a mid-day tour and admire its arches spanning the river.
- Finish your Loire Valley itinerary with a visit to Château de Chambord, the largest and most magnificent château in the Loire Valley.
