Italy is more than just its iconic cities such as Rome and Florence, it’s full of beautiful towns! So during my recent road trip when I drove around Italy, I thought it would be the perfect time to explore some of them.
I had the opportunity to visit the Italian countryside, the tranquil shores of Lake Garda, and take in the medieval marvels of Orvieto. I love how each of these small towns in Italy was so unique and charming.

Sirmione and Lake Garda
Perfect for a Day Trip from Milan or Verona
Discovering Sirmione
Sirmione is nestled on the shores of Lake Garda. When we arrived, I was immediately captivated by its medieval castle, Scaliger Castle, which stood against the backdrop of the sparkling lake. While we wandered through this town behind its ancient walls and cobblestone streets, I was definitely sold on this enchanting town. While we were here, we indulged in gelato by the lake, explored its charming shops, and took in the amazing castle.
Getting to Sirmione
Whether you’re coming from MIlan or Verona, Sirmione is easily reachable by car. Organised day trips are also available for convenience. We drove here and found paid parking very easy. Free parking was already filled by 10 am when we arrived. Try this organise tour.

We spent a day here, but I would recommend spending a night in one of their hotels.

Orvieto
Accessible as a Day Trip from Rome or Florence
Exploring Orvieto
Perched atop a volcanic rock plateau in Umbria, Orvieto has a stunning Duomo, underground tunnels, and Etruscan heritage. Orvieto felt like stepping back in time to a medieval era of knights and kings. While we were here, we got lost just walking through its old town streets, enjoying a meal at a hidden restaurant, and spending far too much time admiring the cathedral. If you saw it, you would know what I mean; the intricate art on the outside was amazing!
Getting to Orvieto
Accessible from Rome or Florence by car or organised day trips. We drove here and paid for parking right at the top next to Orvieto Cathedral (Duomo). Try this organise tour.

Palmanova
A Perfect Day Trip from Venice or Trieste
Palmanova
Palmanova has a distinctive star-shaped layout. Its unique shape immediately caught my attention when I was scrolling through Google Maps, so I knew I had to visit it. Built as a fortress city in the 16th century, its well-preserved historic buildings stand as a testament to its military past. It was a unique experience visiting a town shaped like this, and we enjoyed exploring its historic Piazza. We also enjoyed a meal at one of their many restaurants along the square.

Easily accessible from Venice or Trieste by car.

- Cathedral of Palmanova Historical Museum.
How much time do you need?
We spent a few hours exploring and had lunch there, but it felt like enough time.

Bassano Del Grappa
Accessible as a Day Trip from Venice or Verona
Bassano Del Grappa
Bassano Del Grappa is a charming Italian town renowned for its beautiful historic center, iconic wooden bridge, and home to the traditional grappa. This town has beautiful river and mountain views. One of the popular things to do here is sample local grappa at one of the town’s distilleries, but unfortunately, we didn’t get a chance to (a reason to return). This charming town had so much more to offer than we were able to explore by visiting its Piazza and strolling through its cobblestone streets. Definitely worth an overnight stay or two.
Getting to Bassano Del Grappa
Located within easy reach of Venice or Verona, Bassano Del Grappa can be accessed by train or car, making it an ideal day trip destination. We drove here and were able to find street parking.
What to see in Bassano Del Grappa

- Museo Civico (Civic Museum)
- Grappa distilleries offering tastings
- Piazza Garibaldi with its lively atmosphere.
How much time do you need
We spent the night here at an Italian Villa just a short 10-minute drive outside of town.

Dozza
A Lovely Day Trip from Bologna or Florence
Exploring Dozza
Dozza is a charming village in the picturesque hills of Emilia-Romagna and is famous for its vibrant street art, medieval castle, and regional wines. As I walked through the cobblestone streets of Dozza, I was captivated by the colourful murals along the medieval walls of this village. Dozza offered a very unique day trip experience that left a lasting impression.
Getting to Dozza
Located just a short drive from Bologna or Florence. We were able to get there by car and found free parking. You can also get to Dozza by organised tour.

Exploring Italy’s pretty small towns and villages gives you a different perspective on the Italian way of life. I found that even driving to another town one hour away, there was something so unique and different from the last. So if you get a chance to drive and road trip through Italy, I would definitely recommend adding these small towns to your itinerary.
