My stay at Villa Stecchini and every thing you need to know about Bassano Del Grappa!
Table of Contents
ToggleI always try to stay somewhere a little bit special when I travel, not just for the photos (though they help), but because I love feeling connected to the place I’m visiting. On my recent road trip through Northern Italy, I found exactly that at Villa Stecchini, a 17th-century estate in the charming town of Bassano del Grappa.
This wasn’t just another hotel stay. Villa Stecchini is a family run villa that’s been around since the 1600s and staying there felt like stepping into another time, with just the right amount of modern comfort mixed in. If you’re looking for a stay that feels local, historical, and peaceful, this villa is a hidden gem.

First Impressions of Villa Stecchini
From the moment we arrived, I could tell this place was different. The Stecchini family still runs the villa, and you can feel the personal touch in every detail from the antiques in the hallways to the way the common spaces are laid out for guests to mingle or relax.
I stayed in the Gemma Apartment, which had the perfect blend of old and new. The dining and kitchen areas had that rustic Italian villa vibe, but with all the modern appliances you’d need. The bedroom felt cozy, with warm tones and original furniture that made it feel more like staying in someone’s (very stylish) ancestral home than a typical rental.

A Little Extra Charm
One of my favourite memories was hanging out in the shared lounge area, where there’s a pool table and plenty of space to unwind in the evening. It gave the whole place a relaxed, welcoming energy like you were staying with friends instead of at a hotel.
In the morning, breakfast was served downstairs in the basement, which felt like an old wine cellar. It was simple but fresh and filling and the whole atmosphere made it feel like we were part of a different century.
After breakfast, I wandered around the property and discovered tucked-away corners, charming little gardens, and even some friendly animals roaming around. Every inch of the place has this timeless, peaceful energy that’s hard to describe until you’re there.
About Bassano del Grappa
If you’ve never heard of Bassano del Grappa, don’t worry I hadn’t either until I started planning this trip. But this small town in northern Italy completely stole my heart. It’s known for its grappa (yep, the drink!), the Ponte degli Alpini, and its beautiful old streets full of local charm.
What I loved most was how untouched and authentic it felt. While places like Venice and Florence are packed with tourists, Bassano still feels like a hidden gem.
How to Get to Bassano del Grappa
We decided to drive, and I’d recommend that if you’re road-tripping through Italy. It gave us the freedom to explore nearby towns and arrive right at the villa without needing to navigate train schedules.
But if you’re coming from Venice or Treviso, the train is also a great option. Trenitalia runs hourly trains from Venezia Mestre, and the journey only takes about an hour. Tickets usually cost between €5–10.
Is Bassano del Grappa Worth Visiting?
Absolutely. It’s one of those towns that feels like real Italy from local markets, family run restaurants, scenic views of the mountains and a mix of medieval and Renaissance architecture. It’s compact enough to walk around easily, but there’s more to do than you’d expect.
Whether you’re stopping in for a night or spending a few days, Bassano is one of those under the radar spots that stays with you.
What to Do in Bassano del Grappa
Here are a few things I’d recommend if you’re planning a visit.
- Walk across Ponte degli Alpini – This covered wooden bridge has been rebuilt several times since the 13th century and offers great views of the Brenta River.
- Piazza della Libertà & Piazza Garibaldi – Beautiful squares with cafes, fountains, and markets.
- Poli Grappa Museum – Learn about the town’s signature spirit and try a tasting if you’re feeling brave.
- Wander the Old Town – Get lost in the narrow streets, admire the architecture, and pop into local artisan shops.
- Explore the riverside trails – Perfect for a quiet morning walk or sunset stroll.
- Visit the Civic Museum and local churches – If you’re into art and history, you’ll find some gems tucked around town.
