What to do at Lake Bled? Visit Lake Bled in Slovenia!

Lake bled in Slovenia! What to do at Lake Bled?

If you’ve thought about visiting Slovenia, chances are you’ve heard of Lake Bled, because of the many breathtaking photos all over the internet, and firstly, I can tell you should definitely need to visit this lake. However, you’re also probably wondering if you should stay in Lake Bled or Ljubljana or what to do in Lake Bled. Well, I recently visited it, and let’s delve into these questions and more as I share insights from visiting this beautiful lake.

Is Lake Bled worth visiting?

Without a doubt! Whether you’re a nature enthusiast, a history buff, or simply in search of a relaxing getaway, Lake Bled offers this! We took a leisurely stroll around the 6km lake, and it was relaxing and probably took a lot longer than it should as we had to stop many times and take another photo!

Is it better to stay in Lake Bled or Ljubljana?

The choice between staying in Lake Bled or Ljubljana really depends on time and what you’re looking for. If a relaxing getaway from the hustle and bustle of the city sounds appealing, then definitely stay in one of Lake Bled hotels. There are plenty of hotels, restaurants, and things to keep you occupied while you’re there. We stayed in Ljubljana and drove to Lake Bled for the day, which was perfect for us. We managed to see Lake Bled on a day trip and still really take our time. It does require a full day though!

How to get to Lake Bled in Slovenia?

You can get to Lake Bled via car, bus, or an organised day trip from Ljubljana. If driving, parking is limited so do get there early. If you’re not planning to stay the night or hire a car, I would recommend an organised tour to save time and stress.

TIP: If you’re planning on renting a car in Europe, make sure to check out Rentalcars.com. Also, make sure your car is allowed to cross borders if you plan on driving into different countries. Compare car hire here.

TRAVEL ESSENTIALS FOR SLOVENIA

What to do in Lake Bled?

Take a Scenic Stroll around the Lake (6km)

One of the best ways to really enjoy the lake is to take a 6km walk around it. The walking path gives you spectacular views at different angles with the backdrop of the Julian Alps. It’s an easy walk too, quite flat.

Visit the Island by Pletna Boat (€18 per person)

The most popular thing to do at Lake Bled is to get a boat to the island in the middle. It’s on a traditional wooden Pletna boat which costs roughly 18 euros. This will take you to Assumption of Mary Church, and you will need to climb the 99 steps to the church to explore its historic interior and ring the wishing bell.

Hire a Rowboat (Approx. €30 per hour)

If you’re up for the challenge, you can hire a rowboat! With no reservation necessary, simply head to one of the rental stations around the lake. It’s a great way to enjoy the lake and its crystal clear water at your own pace.

Explore Bled Castle (Tickets from €7 per person)

Bled Castle is again one of the popular sights to see while you’re at Lake Bled. There is plenty to do at the castle, including enjoying lunch or dinner and exploring the castle’s museum, which offers insights into the region’s history and heritage, then dine in its restaurant for a taste of Slovenian cuisine with panoramic views.

Indulge in Lake Bled Cream Cake

Speaking of Bled Cream Cake, no visit to Lake Bled would be complete without trying this iconic dessert. There are many cafes and restaurants around the lake that all sell the famous Lake Bled Cake! It’s made with layers of creamy vanilla custard, whipped cream, and a crisp pastry base! You won’t be disappointed.

Other activities you can do depending on the time of year include the Toboggan at Straza Bled or Paddle boarding and Swimming in the lake. You’ll be able to rent paddle boards from local sellers around the lake.

TIP: Hotels in Lake Bled get more expensive the closer you get to your travel days, and they do get booked up. As soon as you know your travel dates, book your hotel. I use Booking.com for most of my hotel bookings.

My final thoughts

This was a highlight of my trip to Slovenia. Lake Bled promises an unforgettable experience for anyone, whether you’re seeking adventure, relaxation, or simply the chance to soak in the natural beauty of the lake. I could not spend a day here enough!
