Canberra often gets overlooked when people plan their Australian itineraries, but I’m here to tell you it’s worth the stop. I’ve visited a couple of times while road-tripping between Melbourne and Sydney, and every visit reminded me just how much this city has to offer.
It’s modern, super easy to get around, and full of things to see and do that you might not expect from a capital city.

What I love about Canberra is how it blends Australian culture, history, and nature all in one place. You can spend your morning at world-class museums, enjoy lunch by the lake, and finish the day with sunset views from a mountain lookout.
Unlike bigger cities, it’s not overwhelming, you can actually relax and take it all in.
If you’re passing through, make time to explore, even if it’s just for a day or two. And at the very least, visit Parliament House.

Explore Parliament House
Even if politics isn’t your thing, the architecture and history of Parliament House are worth seeing. Take a guided tour to step inside the chambers, learn how the government works, and even walk across the grassy roof with epic city views.

Art lovers will be impressed by the gallery’s huge collection, from Indigenous works to international exhibitions. Don’t skip the sculpture garden, it’s perfect for a quiet wander among the artworks.
Australian National Botanic Gardens
These gardens are a calm escape filled with Australia’s native plants. Walking the trails is a peaceful way to spend an hour or two while spotting local birds and wildlife.
Visit the Australian War Memorial
This is one of the most moving attractions in Canberra. The exhibits tell stories of Australians in wartime, and the Last Post Ceremony at 4:45 pm is an emotional experience you won’t forget. Allow a few hours to explore it properly.
Walk Around Lake Burley Griffin
The lake is the city’s heart, perfect for walking, cycling, or even renting a boat for a different perspective. It’s peaceful at sunrise and beautiful at sunset.
National Carillon on Aspen Island
This 50-bell tower fills the air with enchanting music. Try to catch a live performance, it’s a magical experience with lake views all around.
Telstra Tower on Black Mountain
Drive or hike up to Telstra Tower for panoramic city views. On a clear day, you can see for miles and it’s one of my favourite lookout points in Canberra.
Australian National Museum
This modern museum dives into the stories of Australia’s people and culture in an interactive way. It’s great for all ages and offers a deeper understanding of the country’s history.
The National Arboretum
Covering rolling hills with rare and endangered trees, the Arboretum is both beautiful and educational. Walk the trails, visit the bonsai collection, and enjoy a coffee with one of the best views in Canberra.
National Library of Australia
Beyond the books, this library offers exhibitions, rare documents, and a great café with lake views. It’s a cultural stop you won’t regret.
Questacon – The National Science and Technology Centre
Questacon is hands-on fun for everyone. The interactive exhibits make science exciting, and it’s a hit with kids and adults alike.
Mount Ainslie Lookout
For the best view over Canberra, head up to Mount Ainslie. The layout of the city is perfectly aligned beneath you, and sunset here is breathtaking as the sky turns golden.
Royal Australian Mint
Ever wondered how coins are made? The Mint is fascinating, with displays, live production viewing, and the chance to create a special coin to take home.
Old Bus Depot Markets
On Sundays, this market is buzzing with local crafts, food stalls, and live music. It’s the perfect place to pick up a unique souvenir or grab a delicious snack.
Canberra Food & Wine
Canberra’s food scene is impressive. For coffee, The Cupping Room is my go-to, while Monster Kitchen offers a creative dining experience. If you love wine, the nearby Murrumbateman wine region is perfect for a half-day tour.
