Top Things to Do in Sydney for First Time Visitors

Sydney has a special place in my heart. I lived here for a year and have returned many times on holidays, and every visit reminds me why it’s one of the most beautiful cities in the world.

It’s probably one of the first places you think of when you picture Australia. There’s just something about the mix of sparkling blue harbour, iconic architecture like the Harbour Bridge and Opera House, golden beaches, and laid-back coastal vibes.

During my time here, I spent countless mornings walking along Bondi Beach, evenings sipping wine at Opera Bar as the sun dipped behind the Harbour Bridge, and weekends catching ferries to enjoy the views from the water.

Whether you’re wandering through its historic laneways, catching live music in The Rocks, or relaxing in one of its many parks, it’s a destination that stays with you long after you leave.

If you’re planning your trip, I’ve put together a list of iconic attractions, local tips, and my personal recommendations from my many visits. Trust me, you’ll want to tick off these must-dos (and pre-book the popular ones so you don’t miss out).

Things to Do in Sydney

Tour the Sydney Opera House

You can’t come to Sydney and not visit the Opera House. The design alone is iconic, but stepping inside on a guided tour makes you appreciate its history and engineering even more.

The stories behind its construction are fascinating, and you’ll see parts most visitors never do. If you can, book tickets for a show. It’s a bucket-list experience.

Climb or Walk Across the Harbour Bridge

Walking across the bridge is free, and the views over Circular Quay are gorgeous. But if you want a once-in-a-lifetime experience, do the BridgeClimb. I recommend doing it at sunset and watching the city light up from the top.

Things to Do in Sydney

Explore The Rocks & Circular Quay

The Rocks is Sydney’s oldest neighbourhood, and it’s full of cobblestone streets, colonial pubs, and artisan markets. It’s the perfect place to wander, grab a drink, and soak in the city’s history. From here, jump on a ferry and see the harbour from the water. It’s one of my favourite things to do.

Wander Through the Queen Victoria Building

Step inside and you’ll feel like you’ve gone back in time. The QVB’s architecture is stunning, with stained glass windows and intricate details. It’s also a great spot to browse boutiques or stop for coffee nearby at one of the laneway cafés.

Bondi Beach & the Coogee to Bondi Coastal Walk

Bondi is iconic for a reason. Surfers, sunbathers, and the famous Icebergs pool make it a must. But don’t just stay on the sand. The Coogee to Bondi Coastal Walk is a 6 km path that hugs the cliffs, passing through smaller beaches and lookout points. Go early to avoid the crowds and bring your camera.

Catch the Ferry to Manly Beach

Taking the ferry to Manly is one of the best (and cheapest) ways to see Sydney Harbour. Manly itself has a relaxed surf vibe, perfect for grabbing fish and chips or doing the scenic coastal walk to Shelly Beach.

Relax on Bronte, Palm Beach & Watsons Bay

These are my go-to spots when I want something quieter than Bondi. Palm Beach has a luxury holiday vibe, Bronte is great for families, and Watsons Bay is perfect for seafood with a view. Don’t miss fish and chips at Doyle’s.
Things to Do in Sydney

See Sydney from the Royal Botanic Gardens

The gardens are one of the city’s gems. You can spend hours here wandering among the plants, with the Opera House and Harbour Bridge as your backdrop. Mrs Macquarie’s Chair is my favourite spot for sunrise or sunset photos.

Visit Taronga Zoo

I love that this zoo combines wildlife with incredible harbour views. You can take the ferry over, see native animals like kangaroos and koalas, and ride the cable car for panoramic views.

Ride the Ferris Wheel at Luna Park

Across the harbour, Luna Park is full of old-school charm. Ride the Ferris wheel at night when the skyline sparkles. It’s pure magic.

Go Up the Sydney Tower Eye

Want to see the entire city from above? Head to Sydney Tower Eye. The observation deck gives you 360° views, and the Skywalk lets you step outside on a glass platform. It’s not for the faint-hearted, but it’s worth it.

Eat & Drink with a View

Sydney’s food scene is incredible, but these spots stand out:
  • Opera Bar – perfect for cocktails at sunset
  • Cafe Sydney – fine dining with harbour views
  • Icebergs Dining Room – watch the waves crash while you eat overlooking Bondi

Escape to the Blue Mountains

Just two hours away, the Blue Mountains are perfect for a day trip. Hike to waterfalls, see the Three Sisters rock formation, and breathe in that crisp mountain air.

Explore Royal National Park

South of Sydney, this national park is a paradise of beaches, hikes, and hidden pools. Pack a picnic and spend the day exploring nature.

Go Wine Tasting in Hunter Valley

If you love wine, this is the ultimate day out. The Hunter Valley is full of vineyards, boutique breweries, and artisan cheese and chocolate shops.
