When I was lucky enough to do a road trip through France and started planning where I wanted to visit, the charming town of Dijon popped up on my route. And with a little research, I was easily convinced to visit. Dijon is a centrally located town, so it’s also easily reachable by train, making it the perfect day trip from Paris.
The town is small, has a lovely old-world feel, and is easy to explore in one day, especially with its famous Owl Trail. I fell in love with the Burgundian-style buildings, the delicious food, and of course, the Dijon mustard! This town also gave me that Paris feel without the crowds.
A day trip to Dijon from Paris will truly offer a delightful mix of history, culture, and culinary delights that make it a unique and memorable destination in France that you should definitely visit!

What is Dijon Famous For?
Dijon is renowned for its mustard (Dahhh), wine, and is the historical capital of the Dukes of Burgundy. I was surprised how the city was so well-preserved with medieval and Renaissance architecture which can’t be missed. Plus, Dijon also has a vibrant food scene and beautiful surrounding vineyards making it a must-visit destination in France.
What is the Owl Trail?
The Owl Trail, or “Parcours de la Chouette,” is the easiest way to see the highlights of Dijon. This self-guided walking tour is marked by 22 bronze owl plaques set into the pavements, leading you to the city’s major sites. The trail is named after the famous stone owl carving on the Notre Dame Church, which is said to bring good luck if you touch it with your left hand. It’s a little worn down from being touched over the years, so if you plan on seeing it, make sure to keep a good eye out!

Palace of the Dukes and States of Burgundy
This stunning historical building, also known as Palais des Ducs, now houses the Fine Arts Museum (Musée des Beaux-Arts). The palace itself is an architectural masterpiece that dates back to the 14th century. It showcases a rich collection of art, including works from the Middle Ages to the 20th century, offering a deep dive into Burgundy’s cultural heritage.
Notre-Dame of Dijon
A beautiful Gothic church with the famous owl carving. Built in the 13th century, this church is an excellent example of Burgundian Gothic architecture. The owl, a small stone carving on the exterior, is said to bring good luck to those who touch it with their left hand.
Les Halles Market
A vibrant market designed by Gustave Eiffel, offering local delicacies. It’s a bustling hub where you can find everything from fresh produce to regional specialties like Dijon mustard, Burgundy wine, and cheeses. The market is open several days a week and is a must-visit for food lovers.
Place de la Libération
A grand square perfect for relaxing and people-watching. The semi-circular square is lined with beautiful buildings and lively cafes, making it a great spot to enjoy a coffee or a meal while taking in the atmosphere.
Jardin Darcy
A picturesque garden and a great spot to unwind. Also known as Place Darcy, this English-style garden, created in the 19th century, features beautiful landscaping, fountains, and sculptures. It’s an ideal place for a leisurely stroll or a picnic.
How to Day Trip to Dijon from Paris
By Train
The high-speed TGV train from Paris to Dijon takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes. Trains depart regularly from Paris Gare de Lyon, making it the quickest and most convenient way to travel. By taking the train, you can also enjoy the scenic views of the French countryside. This is the most stress-free way to reach Dijon.
By Car
If you’re comfortable driving in France, Dijon is approximately 313 km (194 miles) from Paris, taking around 3 hours by car. This is how we did it, as part of our road trip, and the drive through the French countryside was delightful. Driving gives you the flexibility to explore at your own pace and stop at charming villages along the way.

How to Get to Dijon from Lyon
The TGV train from Lyon to Dijon takes roughly 1 hour and 20 minutes. If driving, it’s about a 2-hour journey covering around 200 km (124 miles). The drive is straightforward and offers beautiful views of the Burgundy region.
How to Get to Dijon from Strasbourg
By train, it takes about 2 hours and 30 minutes on the TGV. Driving is also an option, taking around 3 hours. Both methods offer scenic routes, with the train being the quicker and more relaxed option, while driving provides more flexibility.
