Booking a Tour for Upper Antelope Canyon

Since Upper Antelope Canyon is located on Navajo Nation land, booking an official tour through an authorized operator is mandatory. This rule ensures both safety (due to flash flooding risks) and preservation of the site.

We booked our tour through Antelope Canyon Tours on Viator, and it cost about $150 per person. Some tours also offer pickup from Lake Powell Blvd in Page if you don’t have your own transportation. Booking early is essential, as tours fill up fast, especially during peak hours when the light beams are strongest. If you book too late in the day, you risk missing those stunning beams, and it can be darker inside the canyon.

Getting to Upper Antelope Canyon

Upper Antelope Canyon is just outside Page, making it super convenient if you’re also visiting spots like Lake Powell, Horseshoe Bend, or if you’re en route to the Grand Canyon or Vermilion Cliffs. We drove ourselves to the check-in area, which offers plenty of free parking.

Once checked in, we hopped into an open truck that took us directly to the canyon’s entrance. The ride was a bit bumpy (desert roads!), but it only took about 15 minutes.

Inside Upper Antelope Canyon - My Exact Experience

Stepping inside Upper Antelope Canyon felt like entering another world. The towering, smooth sandstone walls twist and swirl above you, with soft beams of light filtering down through narrow openings. It’s surreal to see in person and even more impressive than any photo!

We went on a 1 pm tour, so we missed the strongest light beams, which typically occur between 10 am and 12 pm. Even so, the lighting was beautiful, and our guide pointed out the best spots for photos. The canyon isn’t very long, and the walk through took about 30 minutes. It’s flat and easy to navigate—perfect for visitors of all ages.

Tips for Visiting Upper Antelope Canyon

If you’re planning a trip to Upper Antelope (or even Lower Antelope Canyon nearby), here are some key tips to make your visit smoother and more enjoyable.

Book Early – Upper Antelope Canyon is popular year-round, so reserve as soon as you can. Prime slots sell out quickly, especially in summer.

Best Time for Light Beams – For those iconic light beams, aim for a tour between 10 am and 12 pm. While our 1 pm tour still had beautiful lighting, the beams are strongest in the late morning.

Travel Light – Navajo Tribal Park rules prohibit bags, big cameras, drones, or tripods. Stick with your phone or a small camera, and leave everything else behind. The rules are strictly enforced, so don’t risk being turned away.

Expect Crowds – Slot canyon tours are popular, so expect other groups around. The guides do a good job of keeping everyone moving, but it can be a bit crowded.
