As someone who loves both travel and a good glass of wine, I’ve been lucky enough to explore several of France’s most famous wine regions on my last road trip.

So I can easily say that from sparkling Champagne to the deep reds of Burgundy, each region offered me a unique experience. Most of them are just a short trip from Paris.

Whether you’re planning winery day trips from Paris or looking for an overnight trip, Paris makes the perfect starting point to explore these incredible wine regions.

Reims is the heart of the Champagne region, making it an ideal winery day trip from Paris. Just a 1.5-hour drive or train ride away, Reims is known for its prestigious Champagne houses, including Veuve Clicquot.

A visit here wouldn’t be complete without a tour of the underground cellars and tasting sessions of the world-famous bubbly. This trip is perfect for those who want to explore historic Champagne production and enjoy the scenic vineyards.

Epernay, often referred to as the “Champagne Capital,” is another fantastic winery day trip from Paris. Located about 1 hour and 45 minutes away, Epernay is home to the iconic Avenue de Champagne, where you’ll find some of the most prestigious Champagne houses. And I have to say, the Avenue really lived up to its name with its beautiful architecture and Champagne houses.

Dijon in Burgundy

Dijon is the gateway to the Burgundy wine region and is best known for its culinary delights and exceptional wines. Located about 2 hours from Paris by train, Dijon offers a rich history, beautiful architecture, and, of course, world-class wines.

I would recommend an overnight stay, which is what we did, so you’ll be able to explore its beautiful city, architecture, and restaurants.

Beaune for Burgundy Wines

Beaune is the wine capital of Burgundy and is a must-visit for wine lovers. Located about 2 hours from Paris by train, Beaune is surrounded by some of the most prestigious vineyards in the world.

The town itself is charming, with its medieval architecture and vibrant wine culture. Beaune is renowned for its Pinot Noir and Chardonnay wines. The town is small and can be visited on a day trip along with the winery.

France Winery Trips Best for Overnight Stays

Although Alsace is a bit farther from Paris, about a 2.5 to 3-hour train ride, it’s worth the trip for its unique blend of French and German culture, stunning landscapes, and outstanding wines.

Alsace is best enjoyed over a weekend or an extended stay, allowing you to explore the quaint villages, vineyards, and historic sites. This is where you will find some of my favourite towns such as Riquewihr and Colmar, and of course, Strasbourg.

While it’s possible to visit Bordeaux as a winery day trip from Paris, I highly recommend staying overnight to fully appreciate the region’s beauty and wines.

Bordeaux is about a 2-hour train ride from Paris, making it an accessible and rewarding trip for wine lovers.
