This castle in Ljubljana sits right on top of a hill in the old town, so it’s pretty much impossible to miss when you arrive. It’s easily accessible via a steep walk up the hill, funicular, and even by car! And when you’re up there, you’ll get some of the best views of Ljubljana. We went a step further and climbed to the top of the watchtower, and wow this was the million-dollar view of the old town.

Why Ljubljana Castle is Worth Visiting
Ljubljana Castle has been standing for centuries, with a history going all the way back to the medieval era. On my recent visit, I saw a combination of historical architecture and modern attractions, which include a museum dedicated to Slovenian history, a chapel, and an impressive watchtower offering views across the city and river. This is a place I’d highly recommend to anyone wanting to get a true feel for Ljubljana even if it’s just for those sweeping city views, Ljubljana Castle is definitely worth a visit!

Getting to Ljubljana Castle is easy, with a few options based on your preferences.
By foot – Take a scenic 20-minute walk from the old town up a slightly uphill path. It’s an easy route and one I’d recommend if you have the time. I did it this way.
By funicular – For a quicker option, the funicular costs around €4 one way or €6 round-trip. The funicular is a unique way to reach the castle and operates frequently.
By car – If you’re driving, there is parking nearby, though spaces can be limited.

Ljubljana Castle Opening Times and Days
Ljubljana Castle is open daily, though hours vary seasonally. The castle is open year-round, which is great because the views in winter are as stunning as they are in summer, even on colder days. When I visited during winter, the chill was no problem, and the fresh mountain air only added to the experience as we could see snow on the mountains ahead.
What to See Inside Ljubljana Castle
The castle itself offers many things to see and do, so here’s a quick list of highlights.
Viewing Tower – This is where you’ll find the best panoramic views of Ljubljana, the river, and the surrounding areas.
Museum of Slovenian History – A must for anyone wanting to learn more about Slovenian culture and Ljubljana’s past.
Chapel of St. George – A small yet beautiful chapel within the castle grounds, perfect for those interested in architecture.
Puppet Museum – Fun and quirky, this is a great exhibit to check out with kids or if you’re curious about Slovenian traditions.
Are There Dining Options at Ljubljana Castle?
Yes, there are dining options at Ljubljana Castle! Gostilna Na Gradu is a restaurant on site that serves traditional Slovenian dishes in a cozy and rustic atmosphere. It’s the perfect spot to enjoy a meal while taking in the castle’s historic vibes.
How Much Time Do You Need at Ljubljana Castle?
To get the full experience, I’d recommend spending about 1.5 to 2 hours at Ljubljana Castle. This gives you enough time to visit the museum, explore the courtyards, and admire the city from the viewing tower. If you’re planning to dine at Gostilna Na Gradu, add a bit more time to relax and enjoy the food.
