If I could give you one tip for visiting Meteora, it’s this. Spend the night. It was one of those experiences I’m so glad I didn’t rush.
But while planning the trip, I kept running into the same question. Where should you stay, Kalambaka or Kastraki?
I ended up choosing Kalambaka because I wanted more hotel and restaurant options, but if you’re after a quieter village feel with closer views of the rocks, Kastraki might be more your vibe.
When I visited, I did the classic drive from Athens to Delphi, stayed overnight in Arachova, and then continued on to Meteora. It was the perfect way to break up the trip and arrive refreshed.

Where is Meteora, Greece
Meteora is a UNESCO World Heritage site in central Greece, famous for its dramatic rock formations and cliff-top monasteries. It’s one of the most unique places I’ve ever visited and yes, it’s absolutely worth it.
If you’re wondering how far Meteora is from Athens, it’s about 4 to 5 hours by train or car. The closest Athens train station is Larissa Station, where you can catch a direct train to Kalambaka.
Kalambaka vs Kastraki What’s the Difference
This tiny village is built right into the base of the rock formations and has the best views in Meteora. It’s quiet, traditional, and within walking distance of the Meteora hiking trails and some monasteries. If you’re visiting for photography or just want that magical cliffside feel, stay here.
Kalambaka is a bigger town with more accommodation, more restaurants, and a train station. It’s a convenient base, especially if you’re taking a train to Meteora or need transfer services to or from other cities. I would choose to stay here if you prefer to be close to amenities.

My Stay at Hotel Rex in Kalambaka
I personally stayed at Hotel Rex in Kalambaka. It was super walkable to lots of restaurants, supermarkets, and shops. It had comfortable rooms and was an easy base for visiting Meteora. Our room even had a view of the cliffs which was such a nice bonus.

Best Time to Visit Meteora
The monasteries’ opening hours vary by season, but spring and fall are ideal. Aim for April to June or September to October for mild weather, green landscapes, and fewer tour groups.
