The moment I arrived in Athens, I couldn’t believe it had taken me so long to visit.

ToggleIt’s SO good!
Full of history, amazing food, stunning architecture, and those chill city vibes. Athens is a city where ancient ruins are literally right next to restaurants, and sunsets over the Acropolis are amazing! Which is why we booked a hotel on my last trip with a full Acropolis view!
When I was researching where to stay, I knew I wanted to be close to the action and able to walk as much as possible. And like I said, I wanted a view of the Acropolis.
Huge wish list, right?! I ended up landing on a hotel that ticked all my boxes, but I know that’s not for everyone. While I was there (and during my research), I discovered many other great areas to stay in Athens.
So, I’ve broken down the different areas in Athens, who they’re perfect for, and the best hotels for every budget.

Athens Travel Tips for First-Timers
The city is super walkable, especially around the Plaka, Monastiraki, and Syntagma areas. The Athens Metro is easy to use, cheap, and connects you to all major spots.
For airport transfers, I found booking a private transfer ahead of time super convenient.
👉 I recommend this airport transfer.
Comfy shoes for cobblestone streets, light clothing for summer, and a hat for shade. In cooler months, bring layers. If you plan to visit museums or ancient sites, dress modestly and carry a scarf for visiting churches.
Athens is generally safe, but like any big city, watch out for pickpockets, especially in crowded areas like the metro or Monastiraki Square. Use a crossbody bag with zippers.
👉 I like this one.
