When I visited Athens in winter, I honestly didn’t know what to expect especially as it was my first time in Greece. I’d always thought it had to be a summer destination paired with the famous Greek islands.
But between the glowing lights in Syntagma Square and cozy Greek tavernas serving warm comfort food, it ended up being one of my favourite times to explore the city.
An absolute bonus for me was visiting the Acropolis without the huge crowds. Don’t get me wrong, there were still people there, but it was so nice being able to take photos without pushing through tour groups and easily getting close to the sites.

Why Visit Athens in Winter?
If you’re after fewer crowds, mild weather, and a more authentic experience of Athens, winter is a great time to go. The major landmarks are still open, but you’ll get to enjoy them without long lines or intense heat.
We even saw some areas with no crowds at all. The city also takes on a festive charm with twinkling lights, Christmas markets, and hearty winter dishes that just hit differently when it’s chilly outside.

Top Things to Do in Athens in Winter
Athens puts on a festive show during the holidays. The main Christmas market pops up in Syntagma Square, where you’ll find stalls selling ornaments, mulled wine, and festive snacks. There’s usually a giant Christmas tree and music playing. It’s a lovely spot for an evening wander.
Over in Technopolis in Gazi, you’ll find another fun winter village set up with food trucks and decorations. It’s very family-friendly and great if you’re looking for something local and relaxed.
The best part about visiting Athens in winter? You can actually enjoy top sites without elbowing your way through selfie sticks.
Climb up to the Acropolis for views over the city and take your time exploring the Parthenon, Erechtheion, and Temple of Athena Nike. If you’ve always wanted that peaceful moment at the top, this is when to go.

Don’t miss the Temple of Olympian Zeus and the Ancient Agora either of these are often overlooked, and in winter, you’ll practically have them to yourself.
When the weather turns chilly or rainy, Athens’ museums are the perfect place to warm up and dive into Greek history.
- Acropolis Museum – One of the best-designed museums I’ve visited. It gives great context to everything you saw up on the hill.
- National Archaeological Museum – It’s huge but worth it. Especially if you love ancient sculptures and artefacts.
- Benaki Museum – A quieter option with insight into Greek culture from ancient to modern times.

Winter is a great time to slow down and explore Athens’ neighbourhoods without breaking a sweat.
- Plaka – Cobbled streets, pastel buildings, and charming tavernas.
- Anafiotika – A hidden gem tucked under the Acropolis. Feels like a Cycladic island.
- Monastiraki – A little busier, but great for souvenirs and quirky street art.
- Exarchia – Trendy and known for its rebellious spirit and cool cafes.
Each has its own vibe, and you’ll find plenty of cosy spots to grab coffee or lunch along the way.
Athens does winter a little differently than other European cities. Think more subtle, but still festive.
There are often pop-up ice rinks around the city (check in Gazi or near the SNFCC), and open-air cinemas occasionally run special winter showings. You’ll also see neighbourhoods lit up with festive displays, especially around Kolonaki and Ermou Street for Christmas shopping.
Greek cuisine in winter is comfort food at its best. I’m still dreaming about it!
Warm up with a bowl of avgolemono soup (a lemony chicken soup), try moussaka, or share a pot of lamb with orzo in a rustic taverna. Pair it with house wine and end your meal with loukoumades (Greek donuts with honey and cinnamon) or a warm galaktoboureko (custard pie). You won’t regret it.

If you have a few days in Athens, winter is still a good time to explore nearby places—without the usual summer crowds.
- Aegina Island – Just a short ferry ride from Piraeus. I went for the pistachios and stayed for the laid-back vibe.
- Delphi – Magical in the mist. Visiting in winter makes it feel even more mysterious.
- Meteora – I did this on a longer trip by car, staying overnight in Arachova first. It’s much more relaxing than rushing as a day trip and this was one of my favourite experiences in Greece.

What to Pack for Winter in Athens
Athens doesn’t get freezing cold, but it can be rainy and chilly, especially at night. Here’s what I packed (and was glad I did):
- A lightweight waterproof jacket
- Comfortable walking shoes (you’ll be on your feet a lot)
- Layers: jumpers, long sleeves, and a scarf
- Umbrella or packable rain poncho
- A crossbody bag or daypack for day trips
