On our road trip through central Greece towards Meteora, we decided to make a stop in Arachova to break up the journey and get closer to Delphi. I’d heard people call it the “Winter Mykonos” and honestly didn’t know what to expect.
Was it just a ski town? Would it feel touristy?
Firstly, the drive up there from Athens was beautiful with winding roads, mountain views, and that crisp, fresh air that makes you want to roll the windows down even in winter.
When we arrived, the town instantly had that cozy yet lively vibe. It was so picturesque! Stone houses lined narrow streets, and every corner had a taverna or café buzzing with life.
We stayed at the Arachova Inn Hotel, right in the middle of town, which was perfect for walking everywhere. Plus, they had parking!
After checking in, we spent the day just wandering the streets, climbing a lot of stairs (including to the top of the clock tower), trying local dishes, and sitting in a taverna where locals were roasting lamb and sipping tsipouro.
It’s the kind of place that feels both traditional and stylish at the same time. If you’re planning a road trip or even a short escape from Athens, Arachova is one of those stops that just feels right.

How to Get There
- Driving: This is the easiest way, and the route from Athens takes around two hours. This is what we did. 👉 We booked our rental car here.
- By Bus: KTEL buses to Delphi/Amfissa stop in Arachova and take about three hours.
- By Train: There’s no direct rail – take the train to Livadia, then continue by taxi or bus.
- Private Tours: If you’re not driving, day trips from Athens that combine Delphi and Arachova are a great option

The Best Time to Go
- Winter (Dec–May): Ski season is in full swing. The nearby Parnassus Ski Centre has 23 runs and 13 lifts. We went in winter and loved it!
- Spring/Summer: Great for hiking and mountain biking, with cooler air than the coast.
- Autumn: Fewer crowds and beautiful fall colours.
