Packing for France? Here’s Exactly What to Take
Table of Contents
TogglePacking for France can feel a little intimidating. Between the stylish locals, ever-changing weather, and the range of things you might be doing (hello museums, vineyards, beaches, and castles), it’s easy to overthink it.
I’ve been to France multiple times and made all the classic mistakes like too many shoes, not enough layers, forgetting an umbrella… you name it.
So I’ve put together this France packing list based entirely on my personal travel experience to France multiple times! These are the exact types of things I bring (and wish I’d brought) depending on the season, where I’m going, and what I’m doing.
Whether you’re planning a France packing list for 7 days, travelling in summer or autumn, or prepping for a study abroad trip, this packing guide is meant to help you feel prepared and pack like a pro.

Firstly, France's Climate
France has four distinct seasons, but the weather can change quickly, especially in Paris. From my own experience travelling across different regions, you’ll want to prepare a little differently depending on where you’re headed.
When I packed for my first trip to Paris in early spring, I expected light jackets and sunshine. What I got was cold wind, surprise rain showers, and a strong reminder to always pack layers. Meanwhile, on another trip down south to the Loire Valley, it was dry and hot, even in the evenings.
Always pack a light jacket or sweater, even in summer. A denim jacket or light trench coat is perfect.
A scarf is a lifesaver for warmth, style, and covering shoulders when visiting religious sites.
In southern France, expect hotter, drier conditions. Think breathable fabrics and safe sunscreen.
In northern or central France, the weather is more unpredictable. Rain is always a possibility, so pack a small umbrella or raincoat.
