Day 1: Dive into Salzburg's Rich History and Culture
Morning: Hohensalzburg Fortress & Mozart’s Birthplace
Start your day with a visit to the Hohensalzburg Fortress, one of Salzburg’s most iconic landmarks. It’s high on Festungsberg Hill, which you can walk up to or take a funicular. This fortress provides panoramic views of the city and the Alps. Spend your morning exploring the medieval rooms, state apartments, and museums within the fortress walls.
After descending from Festungsberg Hill, make your way to Getreidegasse, a bustling and charming street in the heart of Salzburg’s Old Town. Here, you’ll find Mozart’s Birthplace, a museum dedicated to the life and work of the city’s most famous son. If you’re short on time consider this tour: Life of Mozart Private Guided Walking Tour
Afternoon: Getreidegasse, Salzburg Cathedral & Petersfriedhof Cemetery
After a leisurely lunch at one of the many cafes along Getreidegasse, take some time to explore the street itself. Known for its beautiful wrought-iron guild signs and historical buildings, you’ll want to take lots of photos as it’s so pretty!
Next, head to the Salzburg Cathedral and take in its stunning facade and beautifully decorated interior. The cathedral’s impressive architecture makes it a must-see.
Just a short walk from the cathedral is Petersfriedhof Cemetery, one of the oldest and most picturesque cemeteries in Salzburg. Wander through the cemetery’s peaceful pathways and marvel at the intricate tombstones and wrought-iron gates. The cemetery’s catacombs, carved into the rock face of Mönchsberg, are also worth exploring and offer a unique perspective on Salzburg’s history.
Evening: Salzburg Marionette Theatre
If you’re not tired from exploring, consider a visit to the Salzburg Marionette Theatre. This historic theatre, renowned for its intricate puppet performances, is a cultural gem in Salzburg. Check concert availability.
Day 2: Natural Beauty and Local Delights
Morning: Mirabell Palace & Gardens
Begin your second day at the Mirabell Palace and Gardens, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The palace itself is beautiful, but the gardens are the real highlight. Stroll through the beautifully manicured gardens, adorned with statues, fountains, and colourful flowerbeds. The Pegasus Fountain, featured in “The Sound of Music,” is a popular spot for photos. This is a perfect start to your day.
Afternoon: Basteiweig Trail & Viewpoint
For the afternoon (hopefully the weather permits) embark on the Basteiweig Trail. This scenic hike offers a wonderful opportunity to experience Salzburg’s natural beauty and see the surrounding Alps. It’s a moderately easy hike, suitable for most fitness levels. Alternatively, if hiking is not for you, head to one of the many strudel cafes and enjoy the afternoon at leisure.
Evening: Augustiner Bräu (Beer Garden)
Wrap up your second day with an evening at Augustiner Bräu, one of Salzburg’s oldest and most famous beer gardens and one of my favourite places I visited in Salzburg. Founded by monks in 1621, this brewery serves excellent traditional Austrian beer brewed according to centuries-old recipes. There are many places to get dinner there from the many food stands. It’s a perfect place to end your day.
Bonus Day 3: Explore Beyond Salzburg
If you have an extra day to add to you 2 days in Salzburg itinerary, consider one of these fantastic day trips.
1. Eagle’s Nest
Eagle’s Nest, located in Berchtesgaden, Germany, is about an hour’s drive from Salzburg. This mountain-top retreat was once used by Adolf Hitler and offers breathtaking views of the Bavarian Alps. As you get close to the top of the mountain, you drive through the mountains and then enter an elevator ride through the heart of the mountain to the top. This was an experience of its own! At Eagle’s Nest, you can explore the historical building, enjoy the panoramic views, and even have a meal at the restaurant while taking in the stunning scenery. And it was stunning! Compare tours to Eagles Nest.
2. Hallstatt
Hallstatt, often described as one of the most beautiful villages in Austria, is a perfect day trip destination. It is rumoured to also be the inspiration for the movie Frozen! Nestled between Hallstatt Lake and the Dachstein Alps, this picturesque village is about a 1.5-hour drive from Salzburg, making it a great day trip. You can spend the day wandering through its charming streets, visiting the Hallstatt Salt Mine, and taking a boat ride on the lake. Look at tour options to Hallstatt.
3. Sound of Music Trail
For fans of the classic film, the Sound of Music Trail is a great stroll through the Salzburg countryside and absolutely stunning landscapes. You can take a self-guided tour to iconic filming locations such as Leopoldskron Palace, Hellbrunn Palace, and the picturesque hills where Maria sang “The Hills Are Alive.” Compare tour option.
