Innsbruck, the capital of Tyrol, is nestled in the heart of the Austrian Alps. The only way I can describe this city is by its breathtaking alpine scenery. Innsbruck also has an interesting, rich history which you can see in its architecture and vibrant culture. Innsbruck is really for everyone, whether you’re an adventure enthusiast, a history buff, or simply looking to relax, drink, and eat delicious food. There are lots of things to do in Innsbruck for everyone.
Is Innsbruck Worth Visiting?
Definitely! Absolutely! In my opinion, Innsbruck is a hidden gem that perfectly blends natural beauty with historical significance. From its stunning mountains, great eats, and beautiful architecture, Innsbruck provided me with a unique experience that I actually can’t stop talking about.
How Many Days for Visiting Innsbruck
A 2 day visit is ideal to explore the main attractions in Innsbruck. This will allow you a day to explore the city and at least one to explore the Austrian Alps.
When Should You Visit Innsbruck? (Autumn, Winter, Summer, or Spring)
Innsbruck is a fantastic destination year-round, each season offering its own unique charm:
- Autumn: Vibrant fall colors and scenic hikes.
- Winter: Magical winter wonderland with world-class skiing and festive Christmas markets.
- Spring: Blooming flowers and lush green meadows, perfect for exploring nature trails.
- Summer: Warm weather and outdoor activities like hiking, mountain biking, and enjoying crystal-clear lakes.
No matter when you visit, Innsbruck’s beauty and charm will captivate you.

Innsbruck is accessible by various means:

Where to Stay in Innsbruck
Innsbruck offers a range of accommodations from luxurious hotels to cozy guesthouses. Staying in the city centre or the Old Town area is convenient for easy access to major attractions.
We stayed at Nala Individuellhotel which was just on the outskirts but so close to everything! They also had a parking option which was perfect as we drove to Innsbruck from Salzburg.

How to Get Around Innsbruck
Getting around Innsbruck is convenient and straightforward:
- Public Transport: Trams and buses cover most parts of the city. We found them very easy to use and included in the Innsbruck Card.
- Biking: The city is bike-friendly with numerous rental options.
- Walking: Many attractions are within walking distance, especially in the city centre.
Innsbruck Card – Is It Worth It?
If you are planning on seeing multiple sights that require a paid entry, then absolutely. The Innsbruck Card offers free entry to many attractions, public transport, and a round-trip ride on the Nordkette cable car. Simply just catching the Nordkette cable car and visiting Swarovski Crystal Worlds will be close to the cost of the Innsbruck Card, and trust me, there are more sights to see beyond that!
I’d recommend getting the Innsbruck City Card if you plan to see a lot!

The Golden Roof (Goldenes Dachl)
Start your journey at Innsbruck’s most famous landmark, the Golden Roof. There are 2,657 gilded copper tiles on the roof, and it’s an absolutely stunning sight. It’s a great spot to learn about the city’s history and a good place to start exploring Innsbruck.
Swarovski Crystal Worlds
A short drive from Innsbruck, Swarovski Crystal Worlds in Wattens is a magical experience with its dazzling crystal displays and art installations. There is a free bus from Innsbruck included in the Innsbruck Card. I think this was one of my favourite things to do.

Houses of Mariahilf
Located on the river, this is the picture-perfect place to visit in Innsbruck.
The Hofburg Imperial Palace
Next, head to the Hofburg Imperial Palace. This magnificent palace offers a glimpse into the lives of the Habsburg rulers with its luxurious rooms and impressive collections. The rooms were honestly beautiful! Just note you can’t take photos in the palace.
Ambras Castle
Explore Ambras Castle, located on a hill above the city. The Renaissance castle houses impressive collections of art, armour, and a beautiful Spanish Hall.
The Court Church (Hofkirche)
Adjacent to the Hofburg, the Court Church houses the cenotaph of Emperor Maximilian I and 28 bronze statues, making it a remarkable historical and artistic site.
The City Tower (Stadtturm)
Climb the City Tower for panoramic views of Innsbruck. The 148 steps lead to a viewing platform offering stunning views of the city and the surrounding Austrian Alps.
St James Cathedral (Dom zu St Jakob)
Visit St James Cathedral, an architectural masterpiece with its Baroque interior. The perfect spot for art and history lovers!
Maria-Theresien-Strasse - Where to Stroll in Innsbruck
Take a leisurely stroll down Maria-Theresien-Strasse. This bustling main street is lined with shops, cafes, and beautiful historic buildings. It’s perfect for people-watching and shopping.
The Alpine Zoo of Innsbruck
The Alpine Zoo is the highest zoo in Europe and is home to alpine wildlife!

Wilten Basilica
Visit the beautiful Wilten Basilica, a baroque church known for its ornate interior and stunning frescoes. It’s a peaceful retreat from the city’s hustle and bustle.
Bergisel Ski Jump
The Bergisel Ski Jump, designed by Zaha Hadid, is a popular sight to visit. They hold ski events here, but you can also enjoy panoramic views of Innsbruck from its observation deck.
Nordkette
Take the Nordkette cable car to the top of the mountain range for spectacular views and outdoor activities like hiking and skiing. It’s an unforgettable experience for nature lovers, and I can’t even explain how good the views are. You can enjoy a meal or a drink up there as well.

Nordkette Mountain
Take the Nordkette cable car to the top of the mountain range. Enjoy the spectacular views and perhaps a hot drink at one of the mountaintop cafes. You can get there by taking a local bus.

If time permits, visit the Alpine Zoo, the highest zoo in Europe, home to alpine wildlife and offering educational exhibits. Alternatively, take the free bus from Innsbruck to Swarovski Crystal Worlds in Wattens. You won’t be disappointed by their art installations.
