Where is Tuscany?
Tuscany is located in central Italy. So whether you plan on focusing on the north or south of Italy, Tuscany will be easy to get to or add to your trip. Its capital, Florence, is one of the most beautiful cities in Italy and a perfect base with many hotels, restaurants, and attractions.
Best Time to Visit Tuscany
The best time to visit Tuscany is during the spring (April to June) and autumn (September to October) when the weather is mild, and the landscape looks lush and vibrant. Tuscany truly has the most beautiful landscape. If you’re brave enough to venture in summer (July to August), it’s pretty hot and crowded. Winter (November to March) is quieter but can be chilly, especially in the hilltop towns, but it is perfect if you want to avoid the long lines and busy sights.

How to Get to Tuscany
I found Tuscany to be a really accessible region to visit with lots of options to get there and get around.
Fly: The main airports are Florence’s Peretola Airport and Pisa’s Galileo Galilei Airport.
Train: High-speed trains connect Tuscany to major Italian cities like Rome, Milan, and Venice.
Drive: Renting a car is also a great option for exploring the countryside at your own pace.
How Many Days in Tuscany
If you plan on just spending time exploring all the towns and areas of the Tuscany region, then 5-8 days is ideal. This allows enough time to explore major cities like Florence and Siena, visit the countryside, and enjoy activities such as wine tasting, a Vespa tour, or a cooking class.
Where to Stay in Tuscany
Tuscany offers a range of accommodations from hotels to Italian villas. Don’t worry, there are plenty of budget options as well. I would suggest choosing a base in Tuscany and exploring from there. Florence, Siena, and Pisa are excellent bases.
Transportation and How to Get Around
Public transportation is available, but I would personally recommend renting a car as it’s the quickest and easiest way to explore the Tuscany region. It will also help you access the more remote areas plus the scenic drives won’t disappoint you! Alternatively, you can use trains and buses to travel between major cities and towns or take organised day tours for even more simplicity (I would recommend this also).
Try this day trip to see a few tours in one day. Day Trip to Pisa, Siena, San Gimignano, and Chianti.
TIP: If you’re planning on renting a car in Europe, make sure to check out Rentalcars.com. Also, make sure your car is allowed to cross borders if you plan on driving into different countries. Compare car hire here.
Is Tuscany Expensive?
Average Travel Costs Tuscany can be moderately expensive, especially in popular tourist areas.
Budget travellers can manage with $50-$70 per day.
Mid-range travellers might spend $100-$150 per day.
Luxury travellers can expect to spend upwards of $200 per day.
This would be for food, drinks, activities, and transportation, but not including accommodation. Compare hotels here.
Paying for Things and Using Credit Cards
Credit cards are widely accepted in Tuscany, especially in cities and tourist areas. I had no issues using my international card. However, it’s always good to carry some cash for small purchases, tips, and places that may not accept cards, such as smaller town cafes and restaurants.
10 Best Things to Do in Tuscany
Explore the Historic Center of Florence
Florence is the capital of Tuscany and full to the brim with art, history, and food! My must-visit sights there are the iconic Duomo, the Uffizi Gallery, and strolling across the Ponte Vecchio. In Florence, you can also visit the Accademia Gallery, which is home to Michelangelo’s David.

Ride a Vespa through the Countryside
This might be one of the best things to do in Tuscany. Rent a Vespa and ride through the countryside. This is a fun way to explore the region and offers the freedom to stop and enjoy the views at your own pace. I took a guided Vespa tour, which I would recommend.
This was the exact Vespa Tour I did and recommend.

This could not miss the list! No visit to Italy is complete without indulging in gelato. Especially as you will find some of the best gelato shops in Italy in the Tuscany region. Take a Cooking
With all the great food that comes from Tuscany, taking a cooking or baking class is a must! You can learn how to make traditional Tuscan pasta and pizza dishes. Plus, sticking to the beauty of Tuscany, classes are held in beautiful settings such as historic villas or countryside farmhouses.
Try this cooking class in Florence.

Tuscany is dotted with medieval castles and fortresses in its countryside. Two we would recommend are Castello di Brolio in the Chianti region and Monteriggioni fortress near Siena.
Discover Siena’s Historic Center
Siena is a vibrant city and a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its medieval architecture and the Palio horse race. While exploring, you need to visit Siena Cathedral, wander through the Piazza del Campo, and explore the many museums and churches.
