I had the best time visiting Eagle’s Nest, and I know you will too! On our recent trip through Germany and Austria, we decided to take a last-minute day trip from Salzburg to Eagle’s Nest. This ended up being a fun memory from our trip! We had lunch at the base and enjoyed a beer at the top of Eagle’s Nest with stunning mountain views. We learned about the history of this location and went in the famous elevator.

However, if I visited again, I would do it differently. We drove up and bought our tickets there, which turned out to be a mistake as we had to wait two hours for the next bus up to Eagle’s Nest

Eagle’s Nest, or Kehlsteinhaus, was built as a tea house for Adolf Hitler’s 50th birthday. It was constructed between 1937 and 1938 and served as a retreat and a place to entertain visiting dignitaries. The construction was an engineering feat, involving a dramatic approach via a 124-meter-long tunnel and an elevator shaft inside the mountain. Seeing it in real life was pretty amazing.

You cannot drive directly up to Eagle’s Nest. There is a parking lot at the base where you can take a special bus or hike up. We chose the bus option as it was a 2 to 3-hour hike.

By Car

We drove to the parking area at Obersalzberg and then took a bus to the top. There is paid parking available, and it’s straightforward to use the pay stations. Driving gives you the flexibility to explore the area at your own pace. The parking fee is reasonable, and the bus tickets can be purchased at the site. However, we do recommend pre-purchasing to avoid the lines.

There are buses from Berchtesgaden that will take you to the parking area at Obersalzberg, where you can catch the special Eagle’s Nest bus. This is a convenient and cost-effective option.
