Should you Do a Day Trip from Rome to Orvieto?
I love visiting small towns in Italy, so a few months ago, while I was in Rome, we decided to make a last-minute day trip to Orvieto.
Spoiler: BEST last-minute decision!
This charming hilltop town, known for its beautiful Duomo and quaint, historic feel, was unforgettable for me. Orvieto has picturesque streets and a stunning cathedral, which was one of the highlights of my trip. We even had lunch at a beautiful trattoria, which served one of the best home-cooked lasagnas we had on the whole trip.
If you’re planning a trip to Rome, I highly recommend setting aside a day to explore Orvieto.

Orvieto is a stunning town perched on a volcanic tuff cliff in the Umbria region. Orvieto has a rich history dating back to the Etruscan era and offers many sights, including ancient underground tunnels, beautiful churches, and scenic vistas. The town is small enough to explore in one day, making it an ideal destination for a day trip from Rome.
How Far is Orvieto from Rome?
Orvieto is approximately 120 kilometers (75 miles) from Rome. It’s easily accessible by train or car, making it a convenient day trip destination. We drove our car as we were on a road trip, but it’s easily done on an organized trip from Rome.
How to Visit Orvieto from Rome
Train/Public Transport: The easiest way to get to Orvieto is by train from Roma Termini station. The train ride is about 1 hour and 15 minutes. Public transport is convenient and allows you to enjoy the scenery without worrying about driving.
Car: Driving to Orvieto is another option. Renting a car gives you the flexibility to explore at your own pace. I used a car rental company in Rome, and the drive took about 1.5 hours. The scenic route through the Italian countryside is an added bonus. We also managed to find parking right next to the cathedral, so it was very convenient for us.

Duomo di Orvieto
The Duomo di Orvieto is a magnificent Gothic cathedral known for its intricate facade and beautiful frescoes. The facade, covered with sculptures and mosaics, is a true masterpiece of medieval architecture. Inside, the Chapel of San Brizio features stunning frescoes by Luca Signorelli, depicting the Last Judgment. The Duomo is the centrepiece of the town and a must-see attraction.
Orvieto Underground
Explore the underground tunnels and caves that date back to the Etruscan period. This tour provides a fascinating glimpse into Orvieto’s ancient past. These tunnels, once used for various purposes including escape routes, storage, and wells, reveal the ingenuity of ancient engineering.
St. Patrick’s Well
Built in the 16th century, this well is an engineering marvel with a double helix staircase. It’s a unique sight and offers a cool escape from the summer heat. The well was designed to provide water in times of siege, and its architecture is both functional and beautiful.
