Unlike cities like New York where you can book UberX or UberPOOL, in Rome, your options are limited to Uber Black, UberXL, and Uber Van. However, there are many other ways to get around Rome if needed and not just limited to Uber.

If you’re from America, you’re probably accustomed to using Lyft and might wonder, “Is there Lyft in Rome?” Unfortunately, the answer is no. Lyft does not operate in Rome or anywhere else in Italy. However, there are plenty of other ways to get around the city, ensuring you can still travel conveniently.
Is Uber or Taxi Cheaper in Rome?
When deciding between Uber and a taxi in Rome, the cost can vary depending on your travel needs. Traditional taxis in Rome are a great option for short trips within the city. They use a meter system and can be hailed on the street or found at taxi stands.
On the other hand, Uber Black and UberXL are premium services and are more expensive. They offer the convenience of booking through the Uber app. I used this when I needed to catch an early flight to the airport and prebooked the Uber.

Can You Take an Uber from Rome Airport?
Yes, you can book an Uber from both Fiumicino (FCO) and Ciampino (CIA) airports. Services like Uber Black and UberXL are available for airport transfers. I’ve used Uber from Fiumicino Airport several times, and the experience has always been seamless.

Other Transportation Options in Rome
Regular Taxis
From my multiple trips to Rome, I’ve found that the city has reliable taxis if you would prefer to use them instead of Uber. You can easily spot them on the streets or at designated taxi stands. These taxis are regulated by the city, ensuring safety and adherence to Italian Taxi Drivers standards.
Public Transportation
Rome’s public transportation system is another great way to get around. The buses, trams, and metro train lines are extensive and well-connected. I’ve used public transportation frequently during my visits, and while it may not be as fast as a taxi, it’s definitely the most budget-friendly option. The system covers almost all major tourist spots and neighbourhoods, so it’s pretty convenient if you plan your routes ahead. For instance, the metro lines are excellent for reaching the Vatican Museums or the Colosseum without worrying about traffic.

Walking
Walking around Rome is one of my favourite ways to explore the city if you plan to skip public transport and Uber. Many of Rome’s iconic attractions are within walking distance of each other. Strolling through the streets, you can truly appreciate the city’s architecture, history, and culture. Plus, it’s free and gives you the chance to discover hidden gems in Rome that you might miss when using other transportation modes. Wandering around the city, I’ve stumbled upon charming cafes, local markets, and beautiful piazzas that aren’t always highlighted in guidebooks.
Bicycling
On one of my trips, I decided to explore Rome by bike. The city has been expanding its bike lanes and bike-sharing programs, making cycling a viable option. It’s a fantastic way to cover more ground than walking, and it’s eco-friendly. I found biking especially pleasant in the early mornings or late afternoons when the streets are less crowded. It’s a refreshing way to see the city’s sights, from the bustling Campo de’ Fiori market to the serene parks like Villa Borghese.

Renting a Car
I’ve rented a car in Rome a couple of times when I wanted to explore beyond the city limits. While driving in Rome itself can be a bit daunting due to the traffic and limited parking, having a car was incredibly useful for day trips to nearby towns and attractions. Just be prepared for the hustle and bustle of Roman streets if you choose this option.
