Füssen was never meant to be the main event.
I originally planned to come here for one reason only, Neuschwanstein Castle. That’s why a lot of people come here, especially since Füssen is also the final stop on Germany’s Romantic Road.
Füssen was simply the place we planned to sleep after seeing the castle. However, as soon as we arrived, that plan completely changed. We were visiting in winter, and the town was blanketed in snow, with pastel-coloured buildings glowing softly against the alpine backdrop. Almost immediately, I knew I had definitely underestimated Füssen.
Instead of rushing anywhere, we wandered. Cobblestone streets dusted with snow, painted façades everywhere you looked, church towers rising above the rooftops, it felt like walking through a snow globe. And then when we got to Lechfall, I genuinely couldn’t understand how it had taken me so long to visit.
That evening, we sipped glühwein after sunset, standing out in the cold with warm cups in our hands.
I’m so glad we decided to stay the night. Once the day-trippers left, Füssen felt calmer, more intimate, and far more special. So if you’re considering visiting Füssen, this is the guide and tips I wish I had before going.

Is Füssen Worth Visiting?
Yes, and not just for the castles.
Füssen is often treated as a gateway to Neuschwanstein, but that completely undersells it. The Old Town is beautiful, the setting along the Lech River is stunning, and there’s more than enough here to fill at least a full day, even more if you enjoy slower travel.
Staying overnight makes a huge difference. Once the crowds thin out, Füssen feels quieter, more local, and far more enjoyable.
Why Visit Füssen?
Füssen sits in southern Bavaria near the Austrian border, surrounded by alpine peaks and lakes. It’s one of Germany’s oldest towns and was once a major centre for lute and violin making, which shaped much of its history and culture.
Today, Füssen is known for:
- Its colourful Old Town and frescoed houses
- Easy access to Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau castles
- A dramatic alpine setting along the Lech River
- Lakes, waterfalls, and mountain viewpoints
- Traditional Bavarian food and café culture
It’s compact, walkable, and the perfect mix of culture and nature.
Getting to Füssen
By Train
- Around 2 hours from Munich by regional train
- Trains run regularly throughout the day

By Car
- Füssen is the final stop on the Romantic Road
- Driving gives you flexibility for castles, lakes, and day trips
- Once you arrive, the Old Town is easy to explore on foot

Things to Do in Füssen
Füssen’s Old Town is compact but full of character.
Cobblestone streets wind past pastel-painted houses, frescoed façades, bakeries, cafés, and small shops. It’s the kind of place where you naturally slow down, wander without a plan, and keep stopping for photos.
Look out for:
- Stadtbrunnen with its Saint Magnus statue
- Lautenmacherbrunnen, celebrating the town’s musical heritage
- Franziskanerplatz, marking the end of the Romantic Road
In winter, the snow makes the colours pop even more, and walking through town feels calm and atmospheric rather than busy.

The Church of the Holy Spirit is one of Füssen’s most photographed buildings. Its painted exterior almost looks like a gingerbread church and stands out beautifully against the snow.
Nearby, St. Mang’s Basilica sits within a former Benedictine monastery and features ornate Baroque interiors. Even if you don’t usually visit churches, it’s worth stepping inside, especially since it’s right in the heart of town.
Füssen played an important role in Europe’s musical history.
In the 15th century, it became a major centre for lute and violin making, with one of Europe’s earliest instrument guilds founded here.
A fountain in the Old Town commemorates this heritage, and it’s a detail many visitors walk straight past.
This musical past also connects Füssen to nearby towns like Mittenwald, which helps explain why this region became so well known for craftsmanship.
Neuschwanstein Castle is the reason most people come to Füssen and yes, it really is that impressive.
Built by King Ludwig II, it’s one of the most photographed castles in the world and famously inspired Disney’s Sleeping Beauty castle.
Important tips:
- Tickets sell out quickly
- Visit early in the morning to avoid peak crowds
- Tours are timed and guided
- Füssen is the perfect base, with frequent buses to the castle area
👉 This is one attraction I’d absolutely pre-book here, especially in peak season.
Just below Neuschwanstein is Hohenschwangau Castle, where King Ludwig II grew up.
Many visitors actually prefer this visit because:
- The interiors feel more complete
- You see more furnished rooms
- The experience feels less rushed
If you only have time for one castle interior, this is often the better choice.

For the classic postcard view of Neuschwanstein, head to Marienbrücke (Mary’s Bridge).
You can reach it by:
- Shuttle bus
- Horse-drawn cart
- Around a 50-minute walk
The view is iconic, but it does get busy, another reason to go early if you can.
Next to the High Castle is St. Mang’s Monastery, home to the Museum of Füssen.
Inside you’ll find:
- Historic lutes and violins
- Exhibits on Füssen’s musical past
- Baroque halls and a beautiful library
- The famous “Dance of Death” frescoes
Even if you skip the full museum, the courtyard is free to enter and well worth seeing.
The High Castle of Füssen towers above the Old Town and is one of the best-preserved late-Gothic castles in Bavaria.
Its courtyards feature incredible trompe-l’oeil frescoes, painted to make flat walls look three-dimensional. Even if you don’t visit the museum inside, it’s worth walking up for the views alone.
The Lech River runs through Füssen and adds to the town’s natural beauty.
A short walk from the Old Town brings you to Lechfall, a tiered waterfall built in the 18th century. The bridge offers great views of turquoise water rushing through the gorge and is an easy, scenic walk.
The Tegelberg cable car offers panoramic views over the Bavarian Alps and Neuschwanstein Castle.
At the top you’ll find:
- Walking paths
- Mountain huts
- Paragliding launch points in summer
It’s an easy way to get big alpine views without committing to a long hike.
