Must See Sights in Winter
Even though it’s chilly, winter is still a great time to explore Salzburg’s iconic landmarks. Just rug up and wear comfy shoes!
Hohensalzburg Fortress – It looks even more dramatic with a snowy backdrop. You can take the funicular up for panoramic views over the rooftops. 
I’d recommend pre-booking your fortress ticket here to skip the line, especially around the holidays.
Mirabell Palace and Gardens – The gardens aren’t as lush in winter, but the palace itself (especially the Marble Hall) is worth seeing. You might even catch a classical concert here!
Salzburg Cathedral & DomQuartier – These are indoor highlights, so perfect for chilly or rainy days. The DomQuartier in particular gives you stunning views from above the cathedral.

Classical Concerts – Salzburg leans into its Mozart roots in the best way. I went to a concert at Mirabell Palace and it was such a beautiful, intimate experience. 👉 See available concerts here.
Explore Salzburg’s Cafés – I made it my mission to warm up in every cozy café I came across. Don’t miss trying a Mozartkugel (chocolate and marzipan) and a proper Austrian apple strudel. I still dream about strudel from my Austria trip.
Take a Sleigh Ride or Day Trip to the Alps – If you’re craving a snowy adventure, it’s easy to take a half-day trip from Salzburg into the surrounding countryside. Sleigh rides through snow-covered villages? Straight out of a movie.
How to Spend Christmas & New Year's in Salzburg
Christmas in Salzburg is exactly what you imagine. The markets, the music, the snow. Churches host carol concerts, the streets are lit up, and cafés serve extra-special treats. Most shops close on Christmas Day, so plan ahead and enjoy the quieter atmosphere.
New Year’s Eve (or Silvester) was a total highlight for me. There were live concerts in the old town and fireworks at Kapitelplatz. It’s a great time to splurge on a fancy dinner or book a festive evening concert at Hohensalzburg Fortress.

What to Pack for Salzburg in Winter
Pack warm! It regularly drops below freezing, especially in January.
- A proper winter coat (down or insulated)
- Thermal base layers for exploring all day
- Gloves, hat, and scarf (you’ll need them)
- Waterproof boots or shoes with grip
- A crossbody bag or anti-theft backpack for the markets
- Reusable water bottle, tap water is drinkable
- If you’re going up to the Alps, consider snow boots and snow gear
