We had a 21-hour layover in Chengdu flying from Istanbul to Melbourne and I can tell you now visiting the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding is the best way to spend a short stop in this city.
Even with just a few hours, the experience is unforgettable. I’d only ever seen a panda once before so seeing over 200 pandas in one place (including cubs and red pandas!) felt surreal.
We spent around 3 hours exploring peaceful walking trails, watching pandas play, and grabbing snacks in between.

How to Get Tickets (Don’t Fall for Scams!)
Tickets must be booked online in advance using real-name registration. You’ll need your passport to match the booking.
- Morning ticket: 7:30 AM – 12:00 PM
- Afternoon ticket: 12:00 PM – 5:00 PM
- Tickets open 7 days in advance and sell out quickly!

- Adults: 55–58 CNY
- Students: 27–29 CNY
- Free: Kids under 1.3m, Seniors over 60
Getting There: Metro, Taxi or Tour?
The Panda Base is around 10km from Chengdu city centre.
We had our hotel help with tickets and a taxi, but honestly, booking a guided tour would’ve been easier. A guide sorts out pickup, ID checks, and communication, especially useful if you don’t speak Mandarin.
- By Metro: Line 3 to “Panda Avenue” or “Junqu Da Yiyuan,” then shuttle (2 CNY)
- By Taxi or DiDi: 60–100 CNY / ~40 minutes
- From Tianfu Airport (TFU): 1.5 hours / 200–250 CNY by taxi
- From Shuangliu Airport (CTU): 1 hour by metro / ~10 CNY

What to See Inside the Panda Base
The park is huge, but well-signed and easy to walk around. Expect lots of walking between enclosures.
We spent about 3 hours and saw nearly everything we wanted.
- Giant Panda Enclosures (Villas 1 & 2) – Where most adult and young pandas hang out. Some are famous and have signs/stories posted.
- Panda Nurseries (Sunshine, Moonlight, Star) – Cubs are born July–September, and most playful between Sept–Dec.
- Red Panda Zone – Quieter area, shaded and less crowded. Adorable.
- Giant Panda Museum – For anyone curious about breeding, conservation, and panda history.
- Bamboo Tower (Panda Tower) – Free viewpoint over the park
If you want to save your legs, hop on the internal shuttle (30 CNY), it covers the major zones.
Best Time to Visit & How Long to Stay
- Best Time: Morning (7:30–11:00 AM) as it’s cooler and pandas are more active
- Feeding Times: Around 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM
- Recommended Visit Time: 3–4 hours minimum
Helpful Tips for Visiting
- Go early for fewer crowds and more panda action
- Wear comfy shoes and bring water
- No flash photography
- No hugging, feeding, or touching pandas
- “Panda cuddles” are a scam, don’t fall for it
- Stroller rentals: 5 CNY/hour
