Istanbul is one of the most vibrant and multi-layered cities I’ve ever visited. It stretches across two continents, and I fell in love with the mix of ancient history and modern life.
Each neighbourhood has its own vibe, its own view, and its own reasons to stay. So if you’re overwhelmed by the options, don’t worry, I’ve done the research (and the walking) for you.
When I first came to Istanbul, I stayed at CASA Galata in the trendy Galata neighbourhood. I loved wandering past vintage shops, sipping Turkish tea near the tower, and watching the ferries from the rooftop.
But after days of exploring on foot, I realised every district has a completely different personality and depending on what kind of trip you want, where you stay can totally change the vibe.
I also stayed in Sultanahmet, and this had all the traditional feel you would want. It was walking distance to Istanbul highlights such as the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia.

Sultanahmet – Best for First-Time Visitors & History Lovers
Sultanahmet is the heart of historic Istanbul, and honestly, if it’s your first time in the city, this is where I’d stay. I’ve actually stayed in this area twice. You can walk to all the iconic sights like the Hagia Sophia, Blue Mosque, Topkapi Palace, and the Basilica Cistern.
They’re all just minutes apart. What I love most is the old-world charm here; the buildings are beautiful, and it feels like you’ve stepped back in time. It’s ideal for short stays or anyone wanting that postcard-perfect introduction to the city, without needing to worry about transit or missing anything major.

Galata & Karakoy – Best for Charm, Cafés & Central Location
If you love charming streets, street art, and cafés with a view, Galata and Karakoy will be your vibe. I stayed at CASA Galata and absolutely loved the quiet charm of the neighbourhood.
You’re close to both the Old City and more modern parts like Taksim, so it’s super central. It’s also full of little side streets, quirky boutiques, and cute breakfast spots.
It’s perfect for travellers who want something a bit local and artsy but still well-connected to the rest of the city.

This is Istanbul’s waterfront dream. It feels more peaceful and elegant compared to the busier parts of the city. Think palaces, waterfront parks, and brunch with Bosphorus views. It’s a favourite for couples or anyone on a special trip who wants a bit of luxury. My dream hotel is here: the Çırağan Palace Kempinski, which is an actual palace turned into a hotel! Whether you’re walking the seaside promenade or taking a sunset cruise, this part of town feels like a breath of fresh air.

Kadikoy (Asian Side) – Best for Budget Travellers & Foodies
Kadikoy has a completely different energy from the European side, and I mean that in the best way. It’s more local, way more affordable, and packed with good food.
I’d recommend it to anyone who’s visited Istanbul before or wants to experience something a little less touristy. You can take a quick ferry ride over, and suddenly you’re in markets, seaside parks, and neighbourhoods full of people actually living their day-to-day lives.
I love the Kadikoy–Moda area for budget stays and delicious food.

Cihangir has such a relaxed, creative feel to it. Perfect if you’re someone who likes slower travel or wants a more local vibe. It’s tucked just behind the busier parts of Beyoglu but feels like a quiet little village with stair-stepped streets, vintage shops, and cafés where you could easily spend hours.
I always recommend this area for families, long-stay travellers, or digital nomads who want something a bit more artistic and less touristy, while still being able to walk or take a tram to the big sights.
