Visit Hagia Sophia

Hagia Sophia is one of the most iconic buildings in the world. Once a cathedral, then a mosque, later a museum, and now a mosque again. It’s a true symbol of Istanbul’s layered history. Inside, you’ll find incredible Byzantine mosaics and grand Ottoman architectural details. Don’t forget to dress modestly and bring a scarf if you’re a woman visiting during prayer times.

👉 Pre-book tickets online to avoid long queues.

Try a Traditional Turkish Hammam

A visit to a Turkish bath is more than just a spa day. It’s a cultural experience. Expect marble rooms, lots of steam, and a thorough scrub down. Historic options like Cagaloglu Hammam or Cemberlitas offer an atmospheric (and Instagrammable) setting.

👉 Reserve your Turkish Hammam session here to lock in your spot.

Marvel at the Blue Mosque

Directly across from Hagia Sophia is the stunning Blue Mosque, officially known as the Sultan Ahmed Mosque. Its nickname comes from the beautiful blue Iznik tiles that decorate the interior. It’s still a functioning mosque, so be mindful of prayer times and dress codes. It’s free to visit and gives a great contrast to Hagia Sophia.

Try a Real Doner Kebab

Forget what you’ve had back home. A proper Turkish doner is carved straight from a rotating spit, stuffed into fluffy bread, and served with pickled veggies. You’ll find great ones on nearly every street corner.

Explore Topkapi Palace

Step back in time with a visit to Topkapi Palace, the former home of Ottoman sultans. Wander through opulent rooms filled with treasures, including the famous Topkapi Dagger and the Prophet Muhammad’s cloak. The highlight for many is the Harem, which requires a separate ticket but is 100% worth it.

Wander through the Basilica Cistern

This underground wonder feels like something out of a movie. It was built in the 6th century to store water and is supported by 336 columns. The dim lighting, cool air, and iconic Medusa heads at the base of two columns make it a magical and slightly eerie experience. Great place to escape the heat.

Take a Walking Tour of Sultanahmet

Sultanahmet is home to many of the city’s top sights, and a walking tour is a great way to get oriented. Many are free (tip-based), and you’ll get tons of historical insight.

Eat Balik Ekmek (Fish Sandwich) at Eminönü

You’ll find floating boats grilling fresh fish sandwiches right on the waterfront. It’s super casual, cheap, and one of the most authentic street food experiences in the city.

Get lost in the Grand Bazaar

The Grand Bazaar is a shopping experience like no other. With over 4,000 shops selling carpets, ceramics, lamps, spices, and more, it’s easy to get overwhelmed in a good way. Haggling is part of the culture, so don’t be shy. Just wander and enjoy the vibrant energy.

Cross to Asia via Ferry

A ferry to Kadıköy is only about 20 minutes, but it feels like a different world. It’s more local, less touristy, and full of cool cafes, street art, and a fun market vibe.

👉 Book your ferry tickets or Bosphorus combo here.

Try Turkish Breakfast

If there’s one meal you absolutely shouldn’t miss in Turkey, it’s breakfast. Expect a huge spread of bread, cheeses, olives, eggs, jams, and more. It’s leisurely, filling, and delicious.

Watch the Sunset from Galata Bridge

This is one of my favourite spots to end the day. Locals fish off the bridge while the sun dips behind the skyline of minarets. Grab a tea or snack from a vendor and enjoy the view.

    Visit the Istanbul Modern Museum

If you love contemporary art, this museum is worth a visit. It recently moved into a new space along the waterfront and features both Turkish and international artists. A nice break from the more traditional sights.

Located just behind the Blue Mosque, this smaller market is perfect if you want a calmer alternative to the Grand Bazaar. You’ll find high-quality textiles, ceramics, and jewellery without the crowds.

Sip Turkish Tea or Coffee at a Rooftop Café

This neighbourhood has become one of the coolest parts of the city. Think street art, third-wave coffee shops, and stylish boutiques. Great for people-watching and an afternoon wander.

Eat a Meze Platter and Drink Raki

Meze is the Turkish version of tapas with small dishes like hummus, eggplant salad, and stuffed grape leaves. Pair it with raki (an anise-flavoured spirit) for a traditional experience. It’s a fun and social way to enjoy a meal.

    Visit Süleymaniye Mosque

Less crowded than the Blue Mosque but just as beautiful. The courtyard offers one of the best views over the Golden Horn, especially at sunset. Bring a camera.

    Visit the Archaeological Museums

Just next to Topkapi Palace, this trio of museums is a history lover’s dream. You’ll see sarcophagi, ancient sculptures, and artifacts from around the region. It’s underrated and not too crowded.
