If there’s one place in France that truly feels like a fairytale, it’s Mont Saint-Michel. I challenge you to disagree, haha.

But in all seriousness, I truly fell in love with it, and it surprised me more than I expected.

During my time at Mont St Michel, I spent the night just across from the island. Watching the sunset over the bay with the abbey glowing in the distance was pure magic. We even enjoyed it with an evening picnic.

Most people visit on a day trip, but staying overnight gave me a whole new appreciation for how special this place really is especially once the crowds disappear. (Because wow, those crowds were no joke during the day.) We found it a bit tricky to navigate the tiny streets when it was packed.

Whether you’re planning your first visit or coming back to explore more deeply, here are my top recommendations for what to do at Mont Saint-Michel, including some unforgettable experiences you won’t want to miss.

1. Visit the Mont Saint-Michel Abbey

You can’t come here and not visit the abbey, it’s the main star! Perched at the very top of the island, this Gothic masterpiece has incredible views over the bay, and its history dates back to the 8th century.

2. Walk Along La Grande Rue

The island’s main street is narrow, steep, and packed with charm. It’s lined with little shops, restaurants, and quirky museums. Yes, it can be touristy, but it still feels like stepping back in time. I loved strolling up slowly and popping into a few spots along the way.

3. Take in the Views from the Ramparts

Once you reach the top, loop around the ramparts. It’s the best way to see sweeping views of the bay and the causeway that connects the island to the mainland. The light changes beautifully throughout the day. If you stay overnight, go back again in the early morning or at golden hour.

4. Picnic with a View

One of my favourite moments was having a little picnic just across the bridge on the mainland. There are grassy areas with incredible views of the abbey, perfect for watching the tides shift and the sun go down. Bring some cheese, a baguette, and a bottle of cider (it’s Normandy, after all).

5. Cross the Bay on a Guided Walk

If you’re feeling adventurous, join a guided bay crossing. You’ll walk across the sand and tidal flats (barefoot!), learning about the island’s unique ecosystem and history as a pilgrimage site.

6. Attend a Nighttime Abbey Experience

If you stay overnight like I did, you’ll get to experience the island after dark. The abbey sometimes offers nighttime visits with sound and light installations. It’s absolutely magical walking through the silent stone halls with candlelit corners and music echoing off the walls.

7. Walk the Bridge at Sunset

The footbridge that connects the island to the mainland is one of the best places to catch the sunset. The abbey starts glowing as the light fades, and if the tide’s high, it almost looks like it’s floating. Bring your camera, it’s stunning.

8. Visit the Church of Saint-Pierre

This tiny church is often missed, but it’s tucked into a quiet street just below the abbey. It’s peaceful, has beautiful stained glass, and a few little benches to sit and take it all in.

9. Explore the Local Museums

There are a few small museums on the island that give more context to Mont Saint-Michel’s history, from maritime displays to medieval weaponry. If you’re into history, they’re worth a stop.

10. Dine on a Traditional Omelet

Yes, it’s touristy, but La Mère Poulard is an institution here, and their famously fluffy omelettes are part of the Mont Saint-Michel experience. I’d say it’s worth trying once, just to see the cooks in action and check it off your list.

11. Shop for Local Souvenirs

You’ll find shops selling salted butter caramels (my favourite!), apple cider, books, and medieval themed gifts. It’s a great place to pick up a few things for friends or yourself.

12. Visit the Couesnon Dam

This modern dam at the mouth of the river helps protect the bay’s natural character. It’s a scenic spot for a short walk, and you’ll get another amazing angle of Mont Saint-Michel across the water.

13. Experience the Tides

Mont Saint-Michel is one of the most dramatic tidal sites in Europe. The difference between high and low tide can be up to 14 meters! If you can, plan your visit to see both. Watching the island become cut off (or reconnected) is quite the show.

14. Capture the Island at Blue Hour

Right after sunset, when the sky turns deep blue and the abbey lights come on, it’s absolutely magical. I set up my tripod just off the bridge and got one of my favourite travel shots of all time.
