Melbourne to Sydney Road Trip via Canberra (5 Day Itinerary)

A Melbourne to Sydney road trip is one of those classic Australian drives that every traveller should do at least once. I’ve done this drive so many times, but on my last trip, instead of taking the direct highway, we turned it into a five-day adventure with stops that gave us the perfect mix of Aussie culture, national parks, and beaches.

On this trip, we stayed in hotels and motels along the way (you could easily do it as a camping or caravan journey if that’s more your style). It was a busy itinerary, and at times it felt a bit rushed, but we loved every minute of it.

We mixed in small towns, quirky roadside attractions like The Dog on the Tuckerbox, and incredible coastal spots like Sea Cliff Bridge that made the long drives feel exciting. Would I do this Melbourne to Sydney road trip again? Absolutely!

👉 Tip: Avoid driving at night or during dusk/dawn. Kangaroos are common along the south coast roads and often jump out unexpectedly.

Why This Route Works

This route is perfect if you want a mix of inland history and coastal scenery. You’ll travel through New South Wales towns like Gundagai, experience Canberra (Australia’s capital), and finish with beaches and national parks along the south coast.

Each drive is under 4–5 hours, making it an easy trip even if you’re short on time.

If you’ve got more days to spare, you can easily add extra coastal towns or stay longer in Canberra or Jervis Bay

Day 1: Melbourne → Albury Wodonga (Approx. 3.5 Hours)

Leaving Melbourne, we headed up the Hume Highway for the first leg of this Sydney drive. The road is smooth, and there are several places worth stopping.

Things to See & Do Along the Way:
  • Glenrowan – Step back in time and learn about the Ned Kelly legend.

  • Lake Hume – A perfect picnic stop with scenic dam views.
We stayed the night in Albury Wodonga at Mantra Albury Hotel. The town is a relaxed riverside town with great walking tracks along the Murray River.

Day two took us through Gundagai, a classic New South Wales stop. The Dog on the Tuckerbox statue is an Aussie icon, and the Niagara Café is perfect for coffee and milkshakes. These little stops are what make road trips memorable.

By early afternoon, we reached Canberra. Even with just half a day, we managed to see a few sights.
