Firstly, How to Get to Istanbul City

Most people generally arrive in Istanbul by air. The city is served by two major airports.

Istanbul Airport (IST) on the European side
Sabiha Gökçen Airport (SAW) on the Asian side

Getting to the City

Shuttle, Bus, or Private Transfer: From the airport, you can take a shuttle, bus, or private transfer. For groups, I recommend booking a private transfer, it’s what I did, and it made the arrival stress free. It’s usually cheaper when you split the cost with a group.

👉 Book your airport transfer here.

By Train or Bus: Istanbul’s central stations, including those in Taksim Square, are well connected to other Turkish cities and even neighbouring countries.

By Ferry: If you’re coming from Greece or nearby islands, ferries offer a scenic way to arrive in Istanbul.

Where to Stay in Istanbul

Choosing the right area to stay in Istanbul can make your trip so much easier. On my trips, I’ve stayed in both Sultanahmet and Galata, and each has its perks depending on what you want to see:

Sultanahmet Area: Ideal for first time visitors, as it’s close to the Hagia Sophia, Blue Mosque, and Topkapi Palace all within walking distance.

Galata: Great for its trendy vibe, boutique hotels, and proximity to Galata Tower and Taksim Square. Also, lots to see here as well!

How You'll Spend 4 Days in Istanbul

Start your trip in Sultanahmet, the heart of Istanbul’s history and culture. This area is home to some of the most iconic landmarks, and exploring them all in one day is the perfect introduction to the city.

Hagia Sophia
This breathtaking landmark is a must see for any visitor to Istanbul. I was in awe of the mix of Byzantine and Ottoman architecture, with its grand dome and stunning mosaics. You can explore it on your own as I did, but guided tours offer more insights into its history.

Tip: Wear modest clothing, and women will need to bring a scarf to cover their heads, as it’s now an active mosque.

Blue Mosque
A short walk from the Hagia Sophia, this mosque is equally impressive. Its intricate tilework and serene atmosphere make it a highlight of the day. After seeing the Blue Mosque, take a moment to sit in the gardens between the two landmarks and soak in the view.

Tip: It’s closed during prayer times, so plan your visit. You’ll also need to remove your shoes, and women must wear a scarf to cover their heads.

Seven Hills Restaurant
End your day with dinner at Seven Hills Restaurant, where you’ll enjoy panoramic views of the Hagia Sophia and the Bosphorus. I loved feeding the seagulls while taking in the city lights, it’s a magical experience you’ll never forget.

You’ll get to practice your haggling skills and shop at Istanbul’s bustling markets and cultural treasures. This day is all about vibrant experiences and a touch of shopping.

Grand Bazaar
If you love shopping, the Grand Bazaar will feel like heaven. This sprawling market is packed with stalls selling carpetsjewelleryceramics, and Turkish delights. I spent hours wandering through the maze like alleys, haggling for unique finds.

Tip: Haggling is part of the experience, so don’t be afraid to negotiate. Guided tours are also available if you want to learn more about the bazaar’s history.

Spice Bazaar
Smaller but just as colourful, the Spice Bazaar is a feast for the senses. The aromatic spices, vibrant teas, and sweet Turkish delights make it a must visit. I recommend trying some of the local teas. They make great souvenirs too!

Basilica Cistern
This underground marvel was one of my favourite stops. The dim lighting, mysterious ambience, and iconic Medusa head columns create an unforgettable experience.

Explore the areas along the Bosphorus and experience Istanbul’s charm from the water.

Bosphorus Cruise
cruise along the Bosphorus is a must. I loved sitting back and enjoying the views of the city skylinebridges, and palaces.

Tip: If you prefer to do this at sunset, it’s just as good!

Galata Tower
Climb to the top of Galata Tower for panoramic views of Istanbul. It’s a bit of a climb, but the views are absolutely worth it. Afterwards, wander the surrounding streets filled with boutique shops and charming cafes.

Cheesecake and Turkish Tea
After climbing all those stairs, take a break near Galata Tower with some San Sebastian cheesecake and a cup of Turkish tea. Sitting here, with a view of the tower, was one of my favourite moments in Istanbul, great for people watching too!

Balat
End your day in Balat, a colourful and historic neighbourhood known for its vibrant houses and cozy cafes.
